Memorable Royal Ascot headgear and dresses after Carly cake hat

Coral once again made headlines at Royal Ascot with brand ambassador Carly Baker wearing a hat made of cake on the opening day of the 2016 meeting.
Donned in celebration of the traditional betting market on what colour Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s own headgear will be, the Victoria sponge complete with classic filling of raspberry jam and buttercream was also commissioned as a homage to the monarch’s 90th birthday.
Fiona Cairns, the royal baker who made the wedding cake when Prince William (now Duke of Cambridge) and Kate Middleton tied the knot in 2011, designed Carly’s hat. A team of seven bakers and sugar artists took four days to construct her design.
“Our passion is creating beautiful handcrafted cakes, so it’s an honour to have been commissioned by Coral to make a hat fit for a Queen,” said Ms Cairns.
“We’ve never done anything like this before but I’m sure you’ll agree the outcome is good enough to eat.”
It is not the first time Coral have garnered media attention with Royal Ascot fashion. In 2014, Strictly Come Dancing professional Kristina Rihanoff attended the prestigious horse racing event wearing a dress made from betting slips.
Although in the flapper style, it was deemed to be a breach of the Royal meeting’s strict dress code and the Russian dancer was led away to change into more appropriate attire by a member of security who covered her with a blazer.
Garish hats, in particular, are common at Royal Ascot. One racegoer in 2012 wore a hat fashioned in the shape of a plate with a full English breakfast on it, for example. At least she set herself up for the day!
