Mecca’s Angel hot stuff in Temple Stakes at Haydock
Mecca’s Angel is one of the best sprinters in training and looks a worthy favourite to make a winning return to action in the Group 2 Temple Stakes at Haydock (16:10).
The Michael Dods trained mare has a tremendous strike rate having won seven of her 13 starts, and has also finished placed on three occasions.
In the last of those successes, Mecca’s Angel posted a career best performance when landing the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York in terrific style.
After show bags of early pace in a race run at a searching gallop, the five-year-old was ridden to chase the trali-blazing clear leader Acapulco a furlong from home before showing a smart turn of foot to mow down that rival and win going away by two lengths.
Awesome display against top class rivals
It was an awesome display of speed and power, and Mecca’s Angel had the likes of the re-opposing Gold Ream, Muthmir and Sole Power in behind.
The daughter of Dark Angel has nothing to fear from that trio on the book, and Mecca’s Angel has an excellent record fresh, so the fact that she has not been seen in action for 274 days is not an issue.
The forecast rain will also be in her favour, and with Paul Mulrennan in the saddle Mecca’s Angel can take this to spark off what could be a big season.
Waady feared most
Waady has a progressive profile and looks a big player.
This John Gosden trained gelding improved at a rate of knots last season when winning four times, starting off in handicaps before going on to land the Group 3 Coral Charge at Sandown.
Waady then disappointed when pitched into Group 1 company and finishing just 13th of 15 over 6f at this venue, but that was a big ask after a tough campaign and there was lots to like about the four-year-old’s return to action last month at Newmarket when third of 21 in the Group 3 Palace House Stakes.
The son of Approve raced very keenly in the early stages but showed bags of early pace and held every chance until being unable to find an extra close home to be beaten 3/4 of a length.
That run should have blow away the cobwebs and put Waady spot on for this, and he looks the type who could have even more to offer this season.
