Mattmu ready to cut a dash in Abernant Stakes

Mattmu has plenty going for him in Abernant Stakes
Mattmu has a good record fresh and looks to hold leading claims of making a winning return to action in the Group 3 Abernant Stakes at Newmarket (15.55).
The Tim Easterby trained colt was highly progressive as a juvenile when winning four times, and showed he could mix it at the highest level with some solid efforts last season.
After finishing a fine second to Glass Office on seasonal reappearance in a Group 2 contest at York, Mattmu ran well on his next two starts before landing the Group 3 Phoenix Sprint Stakes at the Curragh in game fashion by a short-head from Toscanini.
The son of Indesatchel then posted a cracking effort when third of 19 to Mecca’s Angel in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York.
Nunthorpe form strong
Mattmu showed plenty of pace to chase the leader in a race run at a blistering gallop, before sticking to the task well to be beaten four lengths.
The four-year-old had the likes of top class sprinters Sole Power and Goldream in behind, and the form reads very well in the context of this contest.
Although, as Mattmu then ran below par when well-beaten on his final start in the Group 1 Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock, that race may have come too soon after his tough race at York and there is little doubt that he is far better than that.
Magical Memory should have more to offer
Magical Memory finished well in front of Mattmu when third in the Betfred Sprint Cup and beaten just 3/4 of a length.
Prior to that, the Charlie Hills trained gelding had been most progressive in landing three hot handicaps in terrific style.
In the last of those, Magical Memory beat Toofi by 3/4 of a length in the ultra-competitive 27-runner Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood to become the first three-year-old to win the race since 1997.
The son of Zebedee is clearly a very useful sort, and should have little difficulty winning in pattern company judged on his Haydock effort.
Magical Memory also looks the type who should have more to offer, and if ready to go at the first time of asking looks sure to give Mattmu plenty to think about.
