The Masters returns to Augusta on Thursday, for the 84th edition of golf’s most famous tournament.
As the world’s finest golfers descend on Georgia, we take a look at some of the favourites and fancied outsiders in our Masters 2020 betting preview…
The bullish DeChambeau won the US Open earlier in the year after using lockdown to adapt his game. And by adapt his game, primarily we mean put on a whole lot of muscle and work with his team to tune his driver.
In the build-up to the Masters he clearly fancied his chances, claiming that for him the course is a par of 67 rather than 72 because of the incredible distances he’s able to find on those powerhouse drives.
If he can hit the drives and match them with solid putting and chipping, the Green Jacket could well be his.
After a six-week injury layoff, there were fears that DJ may have lost momentum going into the Masters, with his stunning 2020 form interrupted by Covid-19.
But a joint second at last week’s Houston Open have largely put those fears to rest, finishing 11-under behind first-time winner Carlos Ortiz.
Johnson will be heartened by that result, as he looks to claim just his second Major.
By now everyone has seen the viral video of Jon Rahm’s practise shot on the 16th, as he skims across the water and the ball curls around the green for a ludicrous hole in one, making the perfect birthday present for the Spaniard.
It’s just another confidence boost for a player who is already riding high at second in the PGA standings. While Rahm is yet to win a Major, he’ll be desperate to turn his excellent form into a win and follow in the footsteps of fellow Spaniards Seve Ballesteros, Jose Maria Olazabal and 2017 Masters winner Sergio Garcia.
The Northern Irishman’s struggles at Majors are well documented by now, but that might just suit him here. No longer among the absolute favourites, McIlroy may be able to go under the radar and play with less pressure.
Of course, there’s the possibility he’ll be putting that pressure on himself – if he does win he’ll join a list of just five other players to win all four Majors and complete a career grand-slam.
A two-time Masters champion, Augusta already holds a place in the Floridan’s heart, after victories in 2012 and 2014, along with a fifth-placed finish in 2018.
Simply put, he’s shown he can do it on this course and he’s not in bad form either, with T-10 finishes in the CJ Cup and ZOZO Championship in recent weeks.
While with every other player on this list we talk about form and their build-up, with Tiger Woods there’s really no point.
The defending champion had a decent 2019 by any player’s standards, but he was not considered a serious favourite going into the 2019 tournament. Those who doubted him were made to eat their words.
While 2020 has been a less impressive year for Woods, write the five-time winner off at your peril.
