Trump must turnaround recent head-to-heads

Day two of the Masters Snooker 2016 has an attractive baize battle between the cue sport’s young pretender Judd Trump (11/2 third-favourite with Coral to win the tournament), and Glasgow’s man on-fire Stephen Maguire.

While the latter has actually lost his place in the top 16 coming into this Alexandra Palace encounter, he holds a terrific recent 13-6 record against the Juddernaut.

Maguire hasn’t lost a match with Trump when there have been 15 reds on the table since the semis of the 2014 UK Championship – an event that Coral sponsored!

Although the Scot is struggling in the rankings, opponent Trump does look a little short as odds-on 1/2 match favourite as he’s suffered three defeats to Maguire (a terrific 13/8 punt) since and hasn’t made past round one of this tournament since 2013.

These two met at last year’s Masters at this stage, and on-fire Maguire took the contest 6-4. A repeat scroreline cannot be ruled out as an 8/1 shot.

In fact, 6-4 is a common result between Trump and the Glaswegian, so for punters who alternatively believe the hype surrounding the former may want to consider that as an alternative outcome at 11/2.

Hawkins could repeat Perry performance

The other first round Masters Snooker fixture on Monday pits under-rated pair Barry Hawkins and Joe Perry against one another soon after the Hawk beat the Gentleman in Championship League action.

As Hawkins edged that very recent encounter 3-2, he is made a narrow odds-on 8/11 match favourite, but the head-to-head record is in Perry’s favour, explaining an 11/10 price on victory.

It’s the Hawk who has won the last two meetings, though, dropping a couple of frames on each occasion. A 6-2 Hawkins victory has a superb 7/1 price to be the exact scoreline in an under the radar clash.
