Manchester United set to grab flying full back Gregory van der Wiel

Manchester United (outside shouts at 33/1 to win the Premier League with Coral) reportedly have PSG right back Gregory van der Wiel on their radar, as the Red Devils prepare to reinforce their rearguard.

Louis van Gaal has struggled to find consistency with his right back berth this term, resorting to fielding trusty but limited wingman Antonio Valencia in an unnatural position, but it is clear that United’s backline needs better balance.

Regular incumbent Rafael has struggled to retain a starting spot following lengthy spells on the sidelines, and the injury-prone Brazilian is widely expected to exit Old Trafford in the upcoming transfer window.

United have already been linked with the likes of Nathaniel Clyne and Seamus Coleman, both Premier League proven players, as Rafael replacements, but could now take an alternative punt on Dutchman Van der Wiel.

The flying full back’s potential bargain pricetag could certainly prove attractive for the Old Trafford club, who are expected to undergo another overhaul in summer, as Van der Wiel is apparently valued at around £9m.

With the Dutch defender’s contract set to expire in 2016, the Ligue 1 big-guns are said to have already started scouting for other options. The 27-year-old has spent three seasons at the Parc des Princes, and is just two appearances shy of a century across all competitions, but could still seek pastures new.

Van der Wiel is currently sharing his defensive duties with on-loan star Serge Aurier, though the Ivory Coast international is banned for PSG’s crunch Champions League clash with Barcelona.

So, any intrigued Red Devils fans should be able to run the rule over their potential new recruit, who is 8/1 in the anytime market to put one past the Catalan giants.

Having made 34 outings for the Parisians this campaign, vivacious Van der Wiel, renowned for his roving runs down the right flank, is a regular fixture, and this reliability should appeal to Louis van Gaal.

The ex-Clockwork Orange coach is believed to be preparing to poach his compatriot and former charge, although the Ajax academy product did not make Van Gaal’s World Cup cut for Brazil last summer.

Van der Wiel did struggle for form and fitness last campaign, but the 42-capped fullback is familiar with Van Gaal’s philosophy, and his improved performances could soon see the rampant right back line up on the opposite defensive berth to Netherlands teammate Daley Blind.
