Liverpool record after thriving Dalglish period doesn’t bode well for Man Utd

Kenny Dalglish’s inspired first stint as Liverpool manager ended with three league titles and runners-up finishes in each of the other three seasons.

However, once Dalglish resigned on health grounds, Liverpool’s league positioned suffered as a consequence.

Graeme Souness could only finish sixth in his two seasons in charge and then in the campaign when he was replaced by Roy Evans in January, things got even worse as Liverpool could only finish eighth.

Evans steadily improved Liverpool again with four successive top-four finishes and this decline under a new manager, which followed a period of success under another, could prove immensely similar to what can be expected at Manchester United in the coming years.

Alongside all of the trophies won by Sir Alex Ferguson, it is worth remembering that Man Utd enjoyed eight successive top-two finishes in the Premier League, a slight improvement on what Dalglish achieved at Liverpool.

Now under David Moyes, Man Utd are suffering some teething problems in the same way that Souness did at Liverpool and the question is will Moyes also be responsible for a big drop down the standings?

Somewhat surprisingly, Man Utd’s odds are 7/4 not to finish in the top five this season and they are currently four points adrift of these positions in seventh.

After six straight wins, Man Utd have lost their way again of late, with successive defeats across competitions and their task of climbing the table is not aided by injuries to leading strikers Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney.

Yet, despite their league troubles, Man Utd are still a shorter price at 4/5 to win a major trophy this season, compared to 10/11 that they don’t, with the fact they are in the League Cup semi finals an obvious reason for this.
