Lingfield and Southwell previews: Wapping has a huge chance

Wapping weighted to strike at Lingfeld for in-form Lanigan
Trainer David Lanigan has a good record with his runners at Lingfield and Wapping can further enhance it with victory in the 1m 2f handicap on today’s card at the Surrey venue (15.10).
The in-form Newmarket handler has a strike rate of 23.53 per cent at the track in the past 12 months and in Wapping has a lightly raced and unexposed colt who looks ahead of his mark.
After opening his account at the fourth time of asking with a ready success in a maiden at Bath, the son of Smart Strike was off the track for 300 days before finishing a highly promising 3/4 length third to Muzdawaj at Newbury earlier in the month.
Wapping was held-up in rear before making good headway two from home to throw down a strong challenge inside the last.
The three-year-old looked all over the winner until being unable to find an extra close home and is sure to strip much fitter for the outing.
It also looked a strong race for the grade and the fourth home Vincent’s Forever, who finished three lengths behind the selection in fourth, has come out and won since.
That gives the form a solid look and although now 4lb higher in the weights a revised rating of 82 for Wapping could seriously underestimate his ability.
One Too May appeals on handicap debut
One Too Many has shaped with plenty of promise in three maiden runs and looks the answer to the 6f nursery (15.40).
After running very green when well-beaten on debut at Nottingham the David Brown trained juvenile filly showed the benefit of that experience when running a cracker to finish a 3/4 length second of 10 to Gigamesh in a 6f contest at the same venue.
One Too Many then found the drop back to 5f against her last time out when doing all her best work at the finish to be beaten 2 3/4 lengths into fourth behind Bay Mesh at Beverley.
The daughter of Zebedee is sure to appreciate the step back up to 6f and after three quick runs has been allotted an opening handicap mark of 70.
That looks exploitable and One Too Many has looks open to any amount of improvement now going down the handicap route.

Sandgate holds solid claims at Southwell
Sandgate has been running well of late and looks to hold outstanding claims of opening his account over the obstacles in the 2m handicap hurdle on today’s card at Southwell (14.50).
The gelding has a fair winner on the flat when trained by Richard Fahey and has gradually got his act together over hurdles since joining Neil Mullholland.
Sandgate has made the frame in his last three outings and shaped far better than the bare result suggests in the last of those when third of 10 to Crazy Train at Stratford.
After being held-up, the four-year-old scythed through the pack to challenge on the bridle approaching two out.
It looked a matter of when amateur jockey James King pushed the button, but when he did Sandgate found less than expected and weakened to be beaten 5 3/4 lengths.
Connections are now fitting him with the tongue-tie and blinkers for the first time and that looks a shrewd move given how Sandgate finished off the race.
If they have the desired effect there is little doubt that the son of Compton Place should be up to winning a weak class 5 contest like this off a mark of 97.
Clubs to come up Trumps in opener
Clubs Are Trumps posted an improved effort when runner-up last time out and can go one better to land the 3m handicap chase that gets proceedings underway (13.50).
The Jonjo O’Neill trained gelding showed progressive form throughout last season when winning five times and after a spell in the doldrums signalled that his time was near again when beaten just a head at Market Rasen last month.
Clubs Are Trumps rallied strongly after the last and despite being carried right by the winner was closing all the way to the line.
The seven-year-old was arguably an unlucky loser and although now 4lb higher in the weights a revised rating of 113 leaves him on a workable mark based on the pick of his form.
O’Neill also does well with his runners at the venue and another plus is that Clubs Are Trumps once again has the services of Will Kennedy in the saddle who has partnered him to all five of his career successes.
