Preview and odds for Sunday’s game

The season’s end will be a disappointment to many Leeds fans as Marcelo Bielsa’s men continue to thrive, but a highly successful first campaign back in the top flight must end this Sunday when their fans see them in the Premier League for the first time in 16 years against West Brom.

Another win – a 17th of the season – at Southampton on Tuesday guaranteed them a top-half finish and 59 points is the prize if they can see off the Baggies.

They were relegated some time ago and boss Sam Allardyce has decided not to stick around for the rebuild, so this is his Premier League farewell – for now.

Sunday’s match is live on BT Sport and kicks off at 4.00pm as we highlight a few potential Leeds v West Brom betting tips.

Leeds v West Brom match odds

A fine second half allowed Leeds to win 2-0 at St Mary’s, Patrick Bamford grabbing his 16th of the season as he continues his push for an England call, before Tyler Roberts’ first Premier League goal.

Despite claims they would burn out, Marcelo Bielsa’s men actually top the form table for the last eight games and if anything seem to be coming on stronger.

Their fans wondered if they would ever see them in the top flight again, and when coronavirus hit, those worries heightened, but upwards of 8,000 fans have that chance this weekend with Leeds priced at 4/9 to make it an even happier occasion.

United and the Baggies were promoted automatically together last summer but their seasons have gone in different directions, highlighted by Albion’s 6/1 price to win here.

Slaven Bilic did not make the turn of the year and Big Sam has said he won’t be around for next season.

A 3-1 home reverse against West Ham on Wednesday put the lid on a torrid season and Albion will be hoping to end on something of a high at a time when there is little to smile about.

Leeds v West Brom head-to-head

Leeds were convincing 5-0 winners in the earliest fixture in the west Midlands, a Romaine Sawyers own goal followed by strikes from Gjanni Alioski, Jack Harrison, Rodrigo and Raphinha.

In fact, United are unbeaten in their last four against West Brom, though they were humbled 4-1 by the same opponents quite early into Bielsa’s reign.

Diomansy Kamara scored twice when West Brom last won at Elland Road, a 3-2 victory back in January 2007.

Previous XI

West Brom: Johnstone, Furlong, Ajayi, Bartley, Townsend, Phillips, Gallagher, Yokusli, Maitland-Niles, Pereira, Robson-Kanu.

Team news

Bielsa took Tuesday as an opportunity to give some of the players he refers to as ‘club’ men an outing at Southampton. Number two goalkeeper Kiko Casilla made a rare start, while club stalwart Gaetano Berardi was given the second half for his Premier League debut.

United fans have one wish for Sunday, though, which is to see former talisman Pablo Hernandez given an emotional farewell before a likely summer departure.

West Brom are seeing the season out with no new injury concerns, with ex-Leeds winger Robert Snodgrass (back) and defender Branislav Ivanovic (hamstring) known absentees.

Key battles

Bamford is one of many stand-out Leeds players this season and he is evens to score at any time, with ex-Leeds man Kyle Bartley tasked with shackling him.

Hernandez, a scorer in Leeds’ 4-0 win over the Baggies in March 2019, is 23/10 to sign off with a goal.

For all their good form, Leeds will need to keep an eye on Matheus Pereira, a 6/1 price to score the first for West Brom, with 10 for the season against his name.
