Konta cut to 33-1 to be Sports Personality of the Year

Leading bookmaker Coral has cut the odds on Johanna Konta winning the 2016 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award into 33-1 from 100-1 after the British number one reached the semi-final of the Australian Open this morning.

Konta is the first British women to reach a semi-final of a Grand Slam in over 30 years and is now into 14-1 to win the tournament, while Coral make her 12-5 to get past her German opponent, Angelique Kerber, in her last four clash tomorrow.

“It’s been over 30 years since the last British women reached a Grand Slam semi-final but after Johanna Konta booked her spot in the last four of the Australian Open we have seen a flurry of bets for her to be crowned the Sports Personality of the Year for 2016,” said Coral’s John Hill.

Elsewhere, in the men’s competition, Andy Murray is 4-1 to win his third Grand Slam on Sunday after he also reached the semi-final in Melbourne.

“It’s been a big 12 months for British tennis and punters are looking to cash in on the success of Murray and Konta as the patriotic support in the betting has really been behind the British pair,” added Hill.
