Kempton preview: Perfect Alchemy has formula for success

Perfect Alchemy has slipped to a handy mark and can take advantage to land the 7f handicap on this evening’s card at Kempton (18.40) now dropped in grade.
The filly was last successful at Windsor back in August 2014 for trainer Ralph Beckett when landing a class 4 contest off a mark of 78.
Now in the care of Pat Chammings, the four-year-old is able to race in this lower grade class 5 affair off 70 having shaped really well in her last two outings.
In the first of those over course and distance, Perfect Alchemy got hampered several times before keeping on strongly at the death to finish 1 1/2 length third behind Dutiful Son.
To my eyes she would have gone close to winning granted a clear passage, and the daughter of Clodovil backed that up with a solid fifth over 1m at this venue last time out.
Going back down to 7f looks sure to suit Perfect Alchemy, and both those contests were class 4 affairs and this represents a drop in class.
Perfect Alchemy also has the services in the saddle of Rob Hornby who is decent value for his 5lb claim, and taking it into account looks weighted to get back to winning ways.
Wahaab worth a punt
In the 6f handicap that closes proceedings (19.40), Wahaab is a fascinating contender on his debut for new trainer Richard Hughes.
The gelding was a smart juvenile when trained by Richard Hannon, winning on debut at Goodwood before finishing seventh of 15 to War Command in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Wahaab has since failed to live up to expectations, but having initially been rated 91 is now able to race off a lowly mark of just 67.
That gives the four-year-old major claims in this class 5 affair, and Wahaab was far from disgraced two starts back over course and distance when sixth to Acolyte in a class 4 contest off 7lb higher when under the care of Ken Cunningham-Brown.
It was a run which suggested the son of Tamayuz retained enough ability to win a race of this nature, and Wahaab is undoubtedly dangerously well-treated if the move to Hughes has freshened him up.
