Leading trainer Joe Tizzard shares his latest Coral blog previewing his runners ahead of a huge weekend of racing at Ascot and Wincanton.
Joe Tizzard Saturday runners blog
We had a quiet spell with the horses just after Christmas, so we backed off them, let them get freshened up, and now we seem to reaping the rewards for that, as they’ve been in great form recently, so much so that I almost wish it was Cheltenham week now!
Talking of Cheltenham, it’s a week I absolutely love, but equally, I have to be realistic, and accept that right now we have a lovely group of younger horses, so we may not have many runners there this year, maybe six or seven, but looking ahead, in the next three to four years, hopefully these young horses now are our Festival horses to come.
Ascot 1.15 – Striking A Pose
There’s still plenty of good racing outside of Cheltenham, and this is a big weekend for us. Striking A Pose was possibly just a bit soft over fences, he didn’t really take to them as we’d hoped, so we’re back over hurdles again here. He’s capable of running well in a race like this, but there is a chance the hustle and bustle of a big field will be too much for him.
I’ve popped the blinkers on him which will hopefully help him deal with the big field, he’s the sort of horse who when he isn’t enjoying himself, doesn’t always try his best, but if he takes to it, gets a bit of space, and is enjoying it, he could run a decent race. And if he doesn’t put it all in, he’ll get dropped a few pounds by the handicapper.

Ascot 1.50 – The Changing Man
This is a race we’ve won with Copperhead and Oscar Elite in the past, I left it late to declare this fellow, but when I saw it was a small field, I was happy to let him take his chance. He’s still a novice, who has run so well in big handicaps this season, finishing second on three occasions, he really deserves to get his head in front. That said, we haven't been disappointed with those runs, he's picked up plenty of prize money and given us some big days out.
He's not quite right at the weights with a couple of these but that's just the conditions of this race and it wasn't a big enough factor to stop us running here. He's right on the cusp of being a horse for the Ultima at the Festival, but I didn't want to wait a month for that only for him to then be balloted out, and then we’ve missed the opportunity of running for a good pot here.
He stays and jumps well, which Copperhead and Oscar Elite both did, and in fact we made a similarly late decision to run Oscar Elite the year he won this, so hopefully lightning can strike twice! If The Changing Man of this season turns up, he's definitely got a chance.
Wincanton 2.15 – Bertie Wooster
I've been a little bit disappointed with this horse this season, I thought he was really going to progress over a fence but so far it hasn't quite happened for him. That said, he did run better last time, finishing third over this course and distance, and he got more confident the further he went. He'll have the cheek pieces on him here which should help sharpen him up. He looks really well in his coat, and I hope he might not be too far away.
Ascot 2.25 – Rightsotom
I haven't really sussed Rightsotom out yet, two runs ago he was really impressive at Doncaster, and it may have been that he just really liked the good ground there that day, but either way I was disappointed with him at Newbury last time, although as I mentioned quite a few of ours were running below par at that stage.
I have no doubt he has the talent for a race like this, but it is a very competitive affair, as you'd expect, and because we are still learning about him, I can't say with confidence this is how we're going to ride him, this is how he's going to run. He’s still very much a horse we think a lot of, and think his best days are still to come.

Wincanton 3.25 – Hatos & Western General
We run two in this two miler. Hatos is a course and distance winner who we bought cheaply out of Anthony Honeyball’s yard. He's been knocking on the door this season, and is owned by a locally based syndicate, so this will be a nice day out for them. Whether he is quite good enough to win this we'll have to wait and see.
Western General never seems to run the same race twice in a row so I don't know which version will turn up tomorrow! However he should get on well with Fred [Gingell], and if he's on a going day, he's definitely good enough to win this, even off of top weight.
Wincanton 4.00 – Pedley Wood
Pedley Wood comes here looking to complete a Wincanton hat-trick, so clearly he’s in great form. He’s a horse who doesn’t over-exert himself during his races, so I’m happy to be running him just 16 days after his last win. It looks a really good opportunity for him and I’d expect him to go very close again.
Ascot 4.10 – First Confession
First Confession didn’t run to anywhere near his best in the Coral Challow Hurdle at Newbury last time, like many of ours after Christmas, so I’ll put a line through that run. He’s won around Ascot, and we’ve come here rather than Haydock as I didn’t want to bottom him on heavy ground up there.
This trip would be as short as he wants it, but he’s another who looks magnificent at home, and while I can’t wait to see him jump a fence next season, this is the right race for him and I hope he can play a big part.
