Coral ambassador previews his eight Saturday rides at Newbury
I’ve been on a brilliant run. I had a really good Doncaster last week with a double on the Thursday, and then a four-timer on the Friday, including a couple of Group winners, and things are going really well.
I’ve ridden 11 winners from my last 21 rides, and when you’re on a run like that you get on horses in the paddock almost expecting that they’re going to win.
Why I like Newbury….
I love riding at Newbury and have had a lot of luck there. It’s a really fair track and the best horse always wins. Because of that owners always want to run nice horses here. The prize money is poor unfortunately for a Grade One track but other than that it’s a great course.
13.10 Newbury – Hukum
I rode him at Owen’s earlier on this season but haven’t sat on him for a while, so he will hopefully go well. My horse is well bred. He’s a half bother to Kasabian who I won on. He should run okay but Owen’s do improve for a run. I suspect Cherokee Trail will be hard to beat even under the penalty
13.45 Newbury – Judicial
This is a nice ride to pick up. He won last time out in a Listed race and he’s a Group 3 winner. I think he’ll have to step forward in this race as Dakota Gold has been so impressive this year. Equilateral is a decent sprinter too. I think Judicial will run well but I couldn’t say he’ll win.
14.20 Newbury – Wadilsafa
He has bags of ability and we are stepping him up in trip today. He was always too keen previously to go up in trip as he was running with the choke out. He’s by Frankel and his offspring are often very keen. I’m hoping he can run a nice race. We want to get him back on track and hopefully this step up in trip will help.
14.55 Newbury – Shadn
Shadn has a good each-way chance. He’s a course and distance winner and was then third in the Prestige at Goodwood which is good form. He’s dropping back to six furlongs, Andrew Balding’s horses are in good form and I think he’ll run well.
15.30 Newbury – Rise Hall
He ran very well behind Forest of Dean last time, and that horse will likely be favourite. He came from a bit further back that day, so hopefully he can improve for that run, and he should have a decent each way chance.
16.05 Newbury – Raaeq
He has a nice pedigree, being by Kingman, and ran a very nice race first time out, so I expect him to go very well.
John Gosden trains Haqeeqy for Sheikh Hamdan’s daughter, but she is having her first run, so I have decided to side with the experience of Raaeq and expect him to build on that encouraging first run.
He won first time out last season, and then I rode him on his first start this season back in April and he finished third in what was a really strong novice stakes.
King Ottokar won the race with Dashing Willoughby second, Space Blues in fourth, Headman back in fifth, Turgenev in seventh. It was such a good run. He lost his way a little bit since then but I’d like to think he can win this off 92.
It’s his first time in handicap company after a string of seconds. He’s been runner-up on his last five starts so I’ve got to try something different to make him win. He’s obviously got ability and hopefully he can get is head in front.
