Jamie Spencer seeking more Goodwood success from his six rides

Published:

I ride Majeed in the first at 2.00. He won nicely at Yarmouth the other day. Obviously this is a different type of race. He likes small fields. He could have run in a big handicap on Tuesday but there you’d have been looking at a race with twenty runners against today’s race with just eight runners. He’s got probably eight to ten pounds to find with most of these today so it’s not an easy task. If he gets in the first three he’ll have run well.

Dragon Mall is my ride in the second at 2.35. He was very disappointing the other day. He was just behind Thikriyaat at Newmarket the time before and I think you can judge him better on that run. This is a strong race. Forge looks a nice horse and Emotionless is on the comeback trail. There are three or four you could really like so if my horse could get in the placings that would probably be as good as you could expect.

I ride Can’t Change It in the Betfred Mile at 3.10. He missed a race recently because the ground was too quick so we are hoping for a bit more rain. He likes Goodwood. He won here in the spring. I fancied him for the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot and he missed the cut by one. When he ran at Newcastle last time he never went a yard on the surface. If he’s back in good form he’ll have a little squeak but the draw makes it nigh on impossible for him. He’s drawn 19 so he will need a minor miracle.

Goken is my mount in the King George Stakes at 3.45. He ran very well at Royal Ascot in the Kings Stand. He’s a kind of work in progress. He had been blazing off and making the pace but in his last couple of starts he’s been dropped in and has run very well. He actually ran well last time in the July Cup and didn’t get any room. Hopefully they’ll go helter skelter and he can pick up the pieces. One of these races will fall his way. It’s not a matter of if just when.

In the Nursery at 4.20 I ride Scofflaw. He’s one of Richard’s that won nicely first time out and then got beat at Pontefract. He’s running off a mark of 81 and won’t have to be a star to win this race as it doesn’t look the strongest nursery. I don’t know much about him so will just have to take it as it comes.

Then in the last at 5.30 I ride Sabre Squadron. Judged on his maiden win a couple of months ago he looks reasonably handicapped given that the horses he beat have won since. Off a mark of 80 here I think he’ll have a good chance. He’s stepping up to 1m3f from a mile which on pedigree should suit. He should have a squeak.
