Jamie Spencer: “My horse may be big odds but Kevin Ryan is very sweet on him”

I’m flying straight back from Salisbury after evening racing to York for Saturday’s rides. I ride in the last race and it’s then 7 miles to the plane so I should be on it by just after half past eight, and should be back in York by quarter to ten, so it’s grand.

I ride Fallen For A Star in the first race at 1.45. He’s a very nice horse. He’s a little bit tricky in that he plays around before his races. They went very slow in his last race and it didn’t suit. He won his previous start at Newcastle from behind, and it’s hard to come from behind at Newcastle the way the new surface there rides. He’s on a retrieval mission but if he can get a good pace to run at, and he relaxes then he can show what he’s made of. The long straight at York gives you loads of time to wind them up and that will suit him.

I’m on Dream Of Dreams in the Gimcrack at 3.25. He won his maiden nicely at Haydock. Then he went to the Curragh for the Round Tower on Irish Derby weekend where he missed the kick, got stuck on the outside, was a bit keen and nothing went smoothly for him. He got to the front about a furlong and a half out and got run out of it in the last half a furlong. Considering what had happened earlier in the race, if everything had gone right he would have won.

I spoke to Pat Smullen afterwards and he just said nothing went smoothly for him. He was drawn on the outside to start with so it was always going to be difficult. Pat said he was much better than the result actually showed. I thought it looks a warm enough Gimcrack. Intelligence Cross and Mubtasim look the two to beat along with Blue Point. It’s a very interesting race and my horse may be big odds but Kevin Ryan is very sweet on him.
