Jacobs and Quillin in a Battle for Brooklyn
In the early hours of Sunday morning, two fighters in their prime collide for home supremacy as Daniel Jacobs (30-1, 27 KOs) defends his WBA middleweight title against former WBO champion Peter Quillin (32-0-1, 23 KOs) in the Battle for Brooklyn.
In both men’s adopted home of Brooklyn, New York, the pair will contest for bragging rights and the WBA strap in this tantalising 160-pound match-up at the Barclays Center, while a 19k home crowd watch on.
Jacobs declares advantage
The 28-year-old defending champion will enter the ring in fine form, coming into this high-profile meeting on the back of 10 successive stoppage victories since his only career defeat in 2010, including two knockouts this year, and he is 5/2 with Coral for another this weekend.
“Not only are we fighting for the bragging rights in Brooklyn, but we both want to be at the top of the middleweight division. All the top middleweights are fighting each other and we’re right in that realm,” stated Jacobs.
“I believe my speed is my greatest advantage. My skill, my ring generalship, I could go on and on. Ultimately it’s about going in there and proving it.
“I think taking a loss before benefits me. I know exactly how to prepare and how to prepare to make sure I never have that feeling again.”
Champion confident of defence
‘The Miracle Man’ stopped Caleb Truax in the 12th round of their contest in April this year, then disposed of Sergio Mora in just two in August and is ready to give his all once again, whether or not that means another stoppage.
“He’s gonna have to hit me to test my chin. This sport is about hitting and not getting hit. Anybody can be knocked down, but you have to land shots. Every time I’ve gotten knocked down, I’ve gotten up,” continued Jacobs, who is 5/1 for a points decision win.
“My prediction is that I’m going to have my hand raised in victory. Whether it’s by knockout or decision, we’ll have to see.”
The challenger, ‘Kid Chocolate’, destroyed Michael Zerafa with a destructive right hand in September in what was a clear mismatch, with his opponent having been escorted from the ring on a stretcher after lying emotionless for some time. Thankfully he was later cleared as doing fine.
Quillin expects changing of guard
That scary knockout came following a bad slip-up from Quillin before his supposed WBO belt clash with Irishman Andy Lee, as he failed to make the weight then eventually drew with a split decision in a non-title fight. He is 9/4 to stop Jacobs on their adopted home patch this weekend though.
“The buzz around Brooklyn is I am the new champ. I came to New York with a small city mindset but big city dreams and now they are all coming true,” stated the challenger.
“You can expect fireworks in the month of December. We’re going to be throwing everything we can possibly throw.
“We’ve got a plan A, plan B, plan C, plan D, plan E, plan F. We are going to go to beyond, but most importantly I am very happy. I am spiritually happy and thankful. You fall out of fear and fall into faith and you can never deny yourself, so that’s where I am right now.
“My prediction for Saturday? A new champion of the world.”
Mayweather inspiring challenger
The confident, undefeated challenger is 7/4 to get the decision after 12 rounds on home soil and he recently bumped into a certain Floyd Mayweather at his upcoming fight venue, a sporting inspiration for Quillin.
“It’s funny because I was speaking to a school today (Tuesday), but when I first met Floyd Mayweather, it was at my school and I was like ‘man I could be like that too one day’ and I told him about it,” continued Quillin.
“It all started because of you..”
“He didn’t understand why I said that, ‘it all started because of you’ and he said ‘what do you mean?’ and I told him what happened. We laughed about it and that’s all I needed right there.
“I didn’t need him to do anything for me just to know that it all started back with him coming to my school and speaking to kids like me and look where I am now. I was only 14-years-old.”
Quillin will need to take plenty of inspiration into his WBA middleweight title bout with Jacobs in order to claim the strap, with both fighters looking to reign supreme in the anticipated Battle for Brooklyn.
