ITV Racing Preview: Can Pinatubo claim first Classic of the season?
Published:The 2,000 Guineas takes place on Saturday
All eyes will be on Newmarket for ITV’s broadcast of the first day of Guineas Weekend on Saturday.
With plenty of action from Newcastle as well, here’s what we’ve got to look forward to and who’s running in the day’s biggest races:
Newmarket
13:50 The Palace House Stakes (Group 3)
14:25 The Dahlia Fillies’ Stakes (Group 2)
15:00 The Newmarket Stakes (Listed)
15:35 The Qipco 2,000 Guineas Stakes (Group 1)
Newcastle
14:05 The Washington Handicap Stakes
14:40 The Sagaro Stakes (Group 3)
15:15 The New Harrington Handicap Stakes
Major Jumbo will be looking to improve on last year’s third-place finish but he’ll face stiff competition from Judicial, who ran two-time winner Mabs Cross close in 2018. Far Above could go well, while Moss Gill is one to keep an eye on after stepping up in grade.
Terebellum impressed with a Group 2 win at Deauville on just her third outing and she holds a 3lb advantage over likely contender Magic Lily. Meanwhile, Queen Power could spring a surprise and Sweet Promise has potential.
Withold and Prince of Arran resume their rivalry after finishing first and second in the 2018 Northumberland Plate, with the former a popular pick here. Elsewhere, Ispolini is unexposed at this distance but won twice in Dubai and claimed the German St Leger last year.
The first Classic of the season will likely be dominated by odds-on favourite Pinatubo, who enjoyed an unbeaten juvenile season in 2019. Arizona will be his biggest competitor after getting within two lengths in October’s Dewhurst. Kameko should also go well, while Wichita will want to bounce back after being well off in the Dewhurst.
