Irish 1000 Guineas odds: Leading contenders for fillies’ Classic

It is the turn of the fillies to chase Classic glory at the Curragh on Sunday and we’re taking a look at the top contenders in the Irish 1000 Guineas odds.
Aidan O’Brien has trained a record 11 winners of this mile contest, but Dermot Weld will be looking to repeat last season’s victory by Homeless Songs.
Here are this year’s market leaders in the Irish 1000 Guineas 2023 betting:
Weld’s filly was made 6/4 favourite for the English equivalent on the back of her impressive triumph over Meditate in the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes as a juvenile at this venue. The Aga Khan-owned daughter of Siyouni was slowly away at Newmarket but recovered well to finish half a length behind Mawj in second, with the third home more than seven lengths adrift and the rest of the 20-strong field spreadeagled. Tahiyra galloped on Tuesday morning and Weld reported: “I’m very happy with her.” Coral’s David Stevens commented: “Mawj and Tahiyra pulled well clear of their rivals in the Qipco 1000 Guineas, and with the former not bidding for a Classic double this weekend, the Aga Khan’s filly is a warm order to land her second Group One success.”

O’Brien’s charge was 11 lengths behind Tahiyra in sixth at Newmarket after getting tapped for toe at the two-furlong pole. That run and her Moyglare defeat leave Meditate with a bit to find, but let’s not forget that she did beat Mawj in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot last year and signed off a cracking juvenile campaign with victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. As the ground was riding soft at HQ, O’Brien will be hoping a dry week can aid the cause of this daughter of sprinter No Nay Never.
Beautifully bred, by Galileo out of Jacqueline Quest, who was first past the post in the 2010 English 1000 Guineas before being demoted to second after a stewards’ inquiry. That makes Jackie Oh a full-sister to Grade One winner Line Of Duty and a half-sister to two other smart types in Secret State and Onassis. O’Brien’s second string kept on well to land a Naas maiden in March and now drops back down in distance after just being edged out by Village Voice over 10 furlongs last month.
Weld also has a solid back-up bred in the purple, being a Shamardal full-sister to French Group Three scorer Taniyar. Tarawa comfortably landed a Leopardstown maiden last October and was a promising second to Zarinsk in the Cornelscourt Stakes at the same track on her seasonal reappearance, when looking in need of the run. Weld confirmed: “We’re very happy with both fillies.”

Jessica Harrington won this race with Alpha Centauri in 2018 and will be hoping this maiden makes significant improvement from two to three. Eternal Silence was third behind the reopposing Aspen Grove in Group Three company over this course and distance last August before belying odds of 50/1 to fill the same position behind Tahiyra and Meditate in the Moyglare. She was soundly beaten that day, but ran as if sure to benefit from the experience.
