International Racing Trader’s Tips: Thursday 23rd April

Our trader Mark Underhill previews Thursday’s racing

The racing fun continues this week, with plenty of actiontaking place across the globe, including in Sweden and the U.S.

And our expert has taken a close look at Thursday’s meetingsat Halmstad and Oaklawn Park.

Halmstad

The course on Sweden’s western coast hosts an eight-cardrace, with Johan Untersteiner looking to add to last week’s successafter he won with two of his four drives. His father Peter also droveand trained a winner on the card.

The pair drove 310 winners between them last year and have continued their form into this year, with 30 combined so far. Peter perhaps has the stronger fancies, with Furies Rain looking to have a leading chance in the 11:42.

He won on debut at Jägersro in November under Johan, beforePeter took charge last time out for a second-placed drive at Åby when returningfrom a long break.

Tragopan Jet has his first start since joining Peter’s stable and it will be interesting to see how he fares in the 12:26. He’s won more than double the amount of races as the other entries with 16 wins and he impressed in third on his most recent start in November.

Oaklawn Park

There are just seven cards left at Oaklawn Park this seasonahead of Thursday evening’s nine-race card.

Since the season began in January, Steve Asmussen haspicked up more than $3.5 million in prize money, having earned three times morethan any other trainer in 2019. He’s sent out 40 winners so far in 2020, withmore than 41% of his runners finishing in the top three.

Meanwhile, Ricardo Santana Jr. has ridden morewinners at Oaklawn Park than anybody else in six of the last seven seasons. Hetops the pile this year with 48 winners and a strike rate of more than 19%.

Asmussen and Santana combined for three winners at Oaklawn Park last week and they team up with four runners on Thursday. Seattle Slang broke her maiden at Fair Grounds last month and she’ll have strong claims from stall two in the three-year-old contest at 23:09.
