Dewhurst Stakes tips: Churchill up for Group 1 battle
Churchill can further enhance his Classic claims by landing Saturday’s Group 1 feature at Newmarket (15:30). Here’s why Coral horse racing experts fancy him among Dewhurst Stakes tips.
The Aidan O’Brien trained colt is a winner of four successive starts since finishing third on his debut at The Curragh. Churchill is currently 5/2 favourite with Coral for next year’s 2000 Guineas. He is also 12/1 joint market leader with stable companion Capri for the Investec Derby.
Churchill’s profile is clearly progressive and he looked a potential superstar when landing the Group 1 National Stakes at The Curragh when last seen in action.
After being held-up in third by jockey Ryan Moore, the son of Galileo was driven to challenge two from home. He then took up the running at the furlong marker and stormed clear to beat Mehmas by 4 1/4 lengths.
Professional attitude
Churchill proved to be well on top at the finish, scoring with tons more in hand than the winning margin suggests.
Although not a flashy type, the manner in which he goes about his business is very professional. Churchill always finds the necessary to get the job done.
This represents the stiffest task that he has faced to date. With Moore once again in the saddle, however, he is expected to come through it with flying colours.
Godolphin gamble on Blue Point odds
Blue Point failed to live up to expectations last time out when a 3/4 length runner-up to The Last Lion in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes at this venue but, prior to that, had looked a really smart sort and looks sure to go well.
The Godolphin owned colt has won three of his five starts. Blue Point proved most impressive at York two start back when landing the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes at York.
After travelling strongly on the heels of the leaders under a confident William Buick, the two-year-old was produced to take up the running a furlong from home before quickening clear to beat Mokarris by three lengths.
It was a most taking performance and the turn of foot shown by Blue Point to quickly put the race to bed marked him out as a very exciting prospect.
The Charlie Appleby trained son of Shamardal looks a work in progress and the type that should have plenty more to offer.
Rivet commands plenty of respect
Rivet is lightly-raced an improving sort who should not be underestimated.
After shaping with plenty of promise when runner-up on his debut at Ascot, the William Haggas trained colt showed the benefit of that epereince to open his account with a facile 3 1/4 length success at York.
Rivet since landed the Group 2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster, where he showed good battling qualities to beat Thunder Snow by a head.
This demands much more, but the son of Fastnet Rock has always been held in high regard. Rivet is clearly going the right way, so can challenge.
