Tom Scudamore: “There is no reason why either couldn’t win this race”
Coral ambassador Tom Scudamore previews his weekend rides
Saturday
He has pleased me at home as I really like the way this horse goes about his work on the gallops.
Before arriving with us, he had one point-to-point appearance where unfortunately he fell, but his confidence should be a lot better now with all the schooling he has done. He just needs to prove himself on the track.
1.01 Aintree – Gericault Roque
David Pipe runs both Gericault Roque and Remastered in this race. They both have entries in the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury. Unfortunately, I can’t ride both, but I like the former’s chances in the big race later this month.
We will be looking for two good performances from both horses here to begin their season. If they do produce their best first time out, there is no reason why either couldn’t win this race.
He is up against it here as he is out of the handicap with plenty to do. His owners love having runners at the big racecourses, so they are happy to take a chance with the horse over the Grand National fences in this race.
I know very little about this horse but he is sure to be well-schooled. Lucinda Russell’s horses are running very well at the moment. They have told me they like this horse, but it is his first day at school so to speak.
Sunday
He is having his first run in the UK but the horse he beat in France on his opening start has since come out and won, so that form has been boosted.
Given he is from Venetia Williams’ yard, I am sure he will know what his job is here and he is likely to turn into a nice horse.
3.35 Sandown – Ramses De Teillee
He is a grand old stager who is now down to a mark of 137. There are some real old favourites in this veterans’ race, which always seem popular with the crowds.
Obviously, if my horse shows anything near what he is capable of, he would be a big player here.
