All the latest information about sport’s comeback

We’ve reached June. The days are getting longer. The weather is getting warmer. And most importantly of all, sport is coming back.

It’s been an unusual few months. Fans of sport have desperately been searching for something to fill their time at the weekends, whether it’s exercising, taking up a new hobby or finally getting round to sorting out the garden.

But fear not. Soon enough we’ll all have an excuse to stop being productive, sink into the sofa and think about nothing else but sport.

German football has gone a long way to filling the void but there’s nothing quite like the enjoyment of British sport.

So with the action slowly but surely set to get back underway this month, we’ve outlined the state of play in all the key events.

Football

Premier League clubs have been gradually getting back to non-contact training, with all members of playing staff required to undergo regular coronavirus testing.

With all parties keen to get the season finished, they’ve agreed on a provisional start date on Wednesday 17th June. The first games to be completed will be Aston Villa against Sheffield United and Manchester City versus Arsenal after they were originally postponed due to the Carabao Cup final.

Following that, the first full round of fixtures will take place that weekend, starting on Friday 19th June.

With games set to take place behind closed doors, fans will be itching to watch their team in action.

Sky Sports, BT Sport and Amazon look set to share the bulk of the games, with Sky prepared to show 24 of their 64 allocated matches on free-to-air TV.

Mohamed Salah

Meanwhile, the BBC will show Premier League matches for the first time, with four games allocated.

The EFL have also agreed on a provisional return date of 20th June for the Championship.

It remains unclear whether League One will follow suit, with clubs believed to be undecided on their preference, while League Two clubs favour ending the season as it stands. All leagues below League Two have voted to finish the season.

Elsewhere in Europe, La Liga in Spain will get back underway with Sevilla against Real Betis on Thursday 11th June, while Italy’s Serie A will resume on 20th June.

Horse Racing

We’re all itching for racing to get back underway and it looks set to make a comeback on Monday 1st June, with a full card from Newcastle.

The action will continue throughout the week, again behind closed doors, with more racecourses slowly reintroducing competition across the south, midlands and north.

The first weekend of action will see three meetings per day, with Newcastle, Lingfield Park, Newmarket and Haydock Park all hosting racing.

ITV Racing have announced plans to show 21 races across three days during the first week.

F1

Formula 1 bosses are looking to start the season with the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday 5th July, with regular testing and extensive safety measures.

In order to control the health of those involved, F1 are hoping to stage two races on consecutive weekends in Austria before heading to the UK to do the same at Silverstone. The aim is to then branch out across the world and finish the season in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi.

All races will likely be available to watch on Sky Sports.

Formula One

Golf

The PGA have confirmed that golf will return this month, initially behind closed doors, starting with the Charles Schwab Challenge in Texas from 11th to 14th June.

The Open has been cancelled but there is still hope for the remainder of the majors. The PGA Championship has been postponed until August while the US Open is scheduled for September and the Masters is set to take place in November.

Meanwhile, the Ryder Cup is still expected to go ahead from 25th to 27th September.

Snooker

The Championship League starts today as 64 players go head-to-head at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes.

What hasn’t been confirmed?

Although there are hopes for Boxing to return in July, there are currently no concrete plans. The British Boxing Board of Control have made it clear that cards will be limited to five fights and will take place behind closed doors. Eddie Hearn has also floated the possibility of staging events in his garden.

The ECB have confirmed that Cricket will remain suspended until at least 1st July. This mean England’s Test match series with the West Indies will have to be rearranged, while the start of The Hundred has been postponed until next summer.

There have been some minor Tennis events taking place across the globe but the ATP and WTA tours remain suspended until 31st July. Wimbledon has been cancelled but there are still hopes to stage the French Open and the US Open.

And finally, there have been no official dates set for the return of Rugby Union or Rugby League, but both are unlikely to get going again until at least August. The Six Nations is also yet to be completed after being postponed mid-competition back in March.
