Coral ambassador Sean Bowen has been cut to 10/11 in this season’s Jump Jockeys Championship odds after getting his campaign off to a flying start.

The 25-year-old Welshman has established a healthy lead over three-time title holder Brian Hughes and fellow contender Harry Cobden.

“Although it’s very early days in this season’s National Hunt jockeys’ title race, Bowen is the first rider to register 50 winners for the campaign and the lead he currently has over Hughes hasn’t gone unnoticed by punters and he’s now clear favourite for the championship for the first time,” said Coral’s David Stevens.

Bowen, a former conditional riders’ championship winner, is aiming to dethrone the hat-trick seeking Hughes, who has drifted out to 2/1, with Cobden quoted at 3/1.

History of the National Hunt title race

The British Jump Jockeys Championship was originally decided on a calendar basis from 1900 to 1925, with Frank Mason winning six of the first eight renewals.

Fred Rees rattled of five victories in the 1920s before Billy Stott equalled that feat in consecutive seasons from 1927-28 to 1931-32.

Gerry Wilson went one better with six straights title triumphs in the 1930s and added another in 1940-41.

Fred Rimell, Tim Molony, Fred Winter, Stan Mellor, Josh Gifford and Terry Biddlecombe were among the other multiple winners before John Francome claimed seven victories in the 1970s and 80s.

Peter Scudamore then emerged as the dominant force with eight triumphs, notably becoming the first rider to reach a double century with 221 winners in 1988-89.

Richard Dunwoody completed a hat-trick in the 90s but Tony McCoy then smashed all previous records with an incredible run of 20 consecutive victories from 1995 to 2015.

AP hit a double ton nine times during that period and posted a landmark 289 wins in 2001-02.

His retirement paved the way for Richard Johnson, 17 times a runner-up, to secure four consecutive successes, before Hughes took over as the top dog.

There was no winner in 1943 and 1944 due to racing being suspended during World War II, while the title has been shared on three occasions.
