Juddmonte International Past Winners List
The Juddmonte International past winners list features some of the great names of European Flat racing over the past half a century.
Although only established in 1972, it has become one of the world’s most prestigious thoroughbred prizes, with £1million in prize money up for grabs.
Run over one mile, two furlongs and 56 yards (2,063 metres), the Group One event is scheduled for mid-August and is the feature race on the opening day of York’s Ebor Festival.
Originally called the Benson and Hedges Gold Cup, the first renewal in 1972 saw Brigadier Gerard suffer his sole defeat in 18 races, going down to Derby hero Roberto.
Juddmonte Farms, the breeding operation of the late Prince Khalid bin Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, took over the sponsorship in 1989.
Since then, the race has gone from strength to strength and is now firmly established among the world’s top-ranked Flat contests.
Frankel stands out as the greatest ever winner, romping home by seven lengths in 2012.
Baaeed’s winning margin in 2022 was only half a length shorter, as he cemented his status as the highest rated turf horse in the world for that year.
Juddmonte International records
Frankie Dettori became the most successful jockey in the history of the Juddmonte International when Mostahdaf provided him with a sixth triumph in 2023, putting the Italian one ahead of fellow legend Lester Piggott.
“This is my last Ebor meeting, my wife has come along and to be the first jockey to get six Juddmonte Internationals, beating Lester, I couldn’t ask for more,” declared Dettori.
That success ended a 16-year drought in the race for Frankie, who previously struck with Halling (1996), Singspiel (1997), Sakhee (2001), Sulamani (2004) and Authorized (2007).
Sir Michael Stoute and Aidan O’Brien share the record for most winners trained, saddling six apiece.
Stoute has struck with Shardari (1986), Ezzoud (1993, 1994), Singspiel (1997), Notnowcato (2006) and Ulysses (2017).
O’Brien has prevailed with Giant’s Causeway (2000), Duke of Marmalade (2008), Rip van Winkle (2010), Declaration of War (2013), Australia (2014) and Japan (2019).
Three horses have won the race twice, with Dahlia, Ezzoud and Halling all claiming back-to-back victories on the Knavesmire.
Duke Of Marmalade goes down as the fastest winner, but his 2008 success came in a rescheduled event at Newmarket after the Ebor Festival was abandoned due to waterlogging.
Brilliant 2009 scorer Sea The Stars posted the quickest time at York when getting the better of Mastercraftsman and his two pacemakers.
