Horse Racing Trader’s Tips: Vaal Preview – Thursday 26th March

| 25.03.2020

Who is our trader backing in Thursday’s racing?

There’s still time for one more South African card before the country goes into lockdown to help contain the coronavirus pandemic.

Vaal hosts eight races card on Thursday and our racing trader Mark Underhill has given us his verdict…

Leading Jockeys

Warren Kennedy is having a great season. He leads the national jockey’s championship and he’s ridden 39 winners at Vaal this season, more than any other jockey.

S’manga Khumalo has the second-most winners at Vaal this season (29). He rode a treble on his last appearance here.

The pair both look set to have strong books of rides on Thursday. Kennedy is partnered with maiden favourite Abdul, the shortest-priced runner on the card, at 13.10.

Warren Kennedy booked rides: Cloth Of Ice (11.50), Blue Moon City (12.30), Abdul (13.10), Highlander (13.45), Green Dragon (14.20), Opening Gambit (14.55), Grindelwald (15.30)

S’manga Khumalo booked rides: Afternoon Tea (11.50), Back To Black (12.30), Turf Master (13.10), Bellagio King (13.45), Tahitian Orana (14.20), Category Four (14.55), Strikeitlikeamatch (15.30)

Leading Trainer

Sean Tarry has 50 Grade 1 wins to his name and he’s trained more winners at Vaal than any of his peer this seaso. He’s sent out 36 winners, giving him a strike rate of just over 14%.

He’s got two strong favourites in action here: Zuluonmystoep (11.15) and Siren Of Greece (12.30).

Sean Tarry runners: Zuluonmystoep (11.15), Siren Of Greece (12.30), Latin Opus & Flattley (1.45, both reserves), Jetorio (2.20)

Horse To Watch

Mike de Kock is well known to anyone with an interest in racing in Britain or Dubai.

He looks to have a leading contender in the mile handicap at 14.55 with Akwaan. Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum’s three-year-old beat a couple of subsequent winners when breaking his maiden at this venue last month.

As a result, he may have been assigned a workable mark for his handicap debut here.
