Who is our trader looking out for in Friday’sracing?
There’s still plenty of racing action across thepond and our expert Joseph Kyne has taken a look at the pick of the bunch.
Domestic racing may be on hold in the UK but itcontinues behind closed doors in the USA, with seven jam-packed cards to choosefrom on Friday.
And we’ve taken a closer look at the action takingplace at Gulfstream Park, Tampa Bay, Golden Gate Fields and Santa Anita.
Gulfstream Park
With the Florida Derby taking place on Saturday,Gulfstream is whetting the appetite with an 11-race card, featuring severalexciting races that could indicate strong form in the future.
The trainer to watch is Todd Petcher, who’s wonfour of the last six Florida Derbies and is the seven-time winner of theEclipse Award for Outstanding Trainer.
He resumes his partnership with dual championjockey John Velazquez with Gimme Some Mo in the opener at 17.00, wherethey’ll be looking to challenge likely favourite Counterstrike.
Petcher also has two entries in the 21.12, with MoneyMoves and Silver Ratio, although he’ll face competition fromVelazquez on Sprawl in an interesting twist.
Tampa Bay
With a strike-rate of 20% or better at this track,it’s worth keeping an eye on top jockeys Samy Camacho and Antonio Gallardo. Camachocould taste success on Parish Poet, who runs on US soil for the firsttime.
He struggled to make an impact when trained by PaulCole in the UK but the promising 4-year-old is a potential improver and mayfare better in the States.
Camacho rides: Sonoma Storm (17.15), Natoma (17.48),G Friday (18.19), R Sweet Exchange (19.50), Malio’s (197.55), Parish Poet (20.26)
Gallardo rides: Billysbirthdaygirl (16.45), Imaginary Friend (17.48),I Ain’t Telling (18.19), J P’s Gia (18.50), Sudden Light (19.21), Dox Folly (19.55)
Golden Gate Fields
The jockey to watch is Juan J. Hernandez, who’s head and shoulders above the rest of the field at Golden Gate. The Mexicanhas seven rides for the evening and he’ll be looking to continue his impressiveseason, with a strike-rate of over 30% so far.
Hernandez rides: Run Like Rhett (20.15), Uber Star (21.22),Zinzan (21.53), La Guapa Velos (22.24), Willing To Burn (22.54) Friend OfAutism (23.24), Cakewalk (23.54)
Santa Anita
It may be a little late for UK viewers but arguablythe race of the evening comes from Santa Anita at 23.09. The showpiece at theCalifornia track could be worth waiting up for, with plenty of familiar silkson show.
As Time Goes By will run in the orange and blue Ballydoyle coloursof Tabor, Magnier and Smith. Trained by US racing legend Bob Baffert, he’s thedaughter of triple-crown winning American Pharoah and she may prove to besomething special in her debut outing.
But she’ll face stiff competition from stablemate Merneith, also trained by Baffert. Another daughter of the Pharaoh, she’s enjoyed two runsso far, missing out by a nose last time out. Her experience will make her thepre-race favourite in this mouth-watering match-up.
