High-flying Saints ready to swoop for Spurs’ Harry Kane

The majority of talk this summer was surrounding the mass exodus at Southampton, following their terrific eighth-place Premier League last season, which also led to boss Mauricio Pochettino leaving St Mary’s for Spurs.

As a result, 5/4 top six chances Tottenham were heavily linked with two Saints players in Jay Rodriguez and Morgan Schneiderlin, but the south coast club were able to hang on to them eventually.

But now the shoe is on the other foot it seems, with new manager Ronald Koeman guiding Southampton all the way up in second this season so far after nine games, nine places and eight points ahead of Spurs already.

Now Southampton look to try get their own back after Tottenham caused so much tension and trouble especially with Schneiderlin, who asked to leave, as they aim to go in for England Under-21 starlet Harry Kane.

The young striker has highly impressed this term already, particularly in the Europa League, where he has smashed in six goals from five qualifying and group games. He also hit a hat-trick in his side’s most recent fixture against Asteras Tripoli to help Spurs to a 5-1 win.

Kane’s form in the Premier League has been less effective, though, but he has only been given opportunities from off the bench, managing no more than 70 minutes in his six appearances this campaign. Flops Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor have been picked ahead of him.

That could suggests that he would be willing to move on to gain more first-team action, with Southampton renowned for giving youth a chance. The 21-year-old forward would have to fight out for a place in the starting XI with new star Saints striker Graziano Pelle, though, who already has six goals in nine league games this season.

Kane signed a new five-year deal with Tottenham this summer, but could be available for a fee as little as £10m, which, as recent history shows, for a promising English player would be a bargain.

If you fancy Southampton to keep up their fantastic form until the end of the season, then take odds of 9/2 for them to finish in the top four, but their price of 5/4 suggests they’re more likely to make the top six.
