In our guide to World Cup Group G, we assess the prospects of Brazil, Serbia, Switzerland and Cameroon as they bid to reach the last 16 at Qatar 2022.

Brazil

Brazil head to Qatar as the tournament favourites as they bid to get their hands back on the World Cup for the first time in 20 years.

They have reached at least the quarter-final stage at the last eight editions so it would be a huge surprise if they have much trouble in Group G, especially having topped a group which also contained Serbia and Switzerland four years ago.

Qualifying for Qatar was no trouble with Brazil finishing top of the South American standings with an unbeaten record, scoring 40 goals and conceding just five.

Neymar is the star man but coach Tite has plenty of other exciting options to call upon.

Serbia

Serbia missed out on the knockout stage at Russia 2018 despite starting with a 1-0 victory over Costa Rica.

That was followed by a 2-1 defeat against Switzerland when ethnic Albanians Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri celebrated their goals with a ‘double eagle’ celebration which provoked anger in Serbia.

That adds extra tension to their meeting in the final round of matches, especially if that proves decisive in terms of qualifying for the last 16.

Serbia will be confident of getting revenge though, having won their qualifying group ahead of Portugal thanks to the goals of Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic and also topping their Nations League pool this year.

Switzerland

Switzerland have a good record of getting out of their World Cup group, which they have managed at three of the last four finals.

Qualifying from a group containing European champions Italy also bodes well for their chances and their 1-1 draw with Brazil in their opening game four years ago will give them hope of taking points off the South Americans once again.

Last summer’s victory over France in the round of 16 at the European Championship proved they can be a threat to anyone on their day but they lack the star quality of the leading teams.

Cameroon

Cameroon’s World Cup history is dominated by memories of Italia ’90 and Roger Milla but they have struggled to match those feats since then.

Their run to the quarter-finals 32 years ago remains their only appearance in the knockout stage, having failed to get out of their group in five subsequent editions at which they appeared.

The Indomitable Lions lost all three matches in 2010 and 2014 before failing to qualify in 2018 so odds of 4/1 for them to return home pointless are worth considering.

They made hard work of qualifying, edging past Algeria on away goals, but at least in Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana they have a solid presence between the posts.
