Cheltenham Festival: Gold Cup Past Winners

All you need to know about the previous Cheltenham Gold Cup winners

Arkle, Kauto Star and Denman have all stormed up the Cheltenham hill to win National Hunt’s most iconic race and here we have all you need to know about the most famous winners of the blue riband in our Cheltenham Gold Cup winners list ahead of this year’s race in March.

The most successful Gold Cup horse of all time is Golden Miller, who won the 3m2f contest five years in a row between 1932 and 1936. He was trained by Basil Briscoe for four of his victories, with Owen Anthony taking over the fine tuning for his final Cheltenham Gold Cup victory.

Golden Miller’s owner Dorothy Paget is the winning-most owner of the race and along with her record-breaking gelding’s five victories, also saw Roman Hackle (1940) and Mont Tremblant (1952) carry her colours to success.

Only three other horses have won a hat-trick of Gold Cups – Cottage Rake (1948-50), Arkle (1964-66) and most recently Best Mate (2002-04) – while L’Escargot (1970-71) and Al Boum Photo (2019-20) are horses who have won back-to-back Cheltenham Gold Cups.

Kauto Star is one of the most recognisable names on our Cheltenham Gold Cup winners list and he is the only horse to regain the Gold Cup having surrendered the crown to Denman in 2008, bouncing back to his very best in 2009.

Kauto Star’s trainer Paul Nicholls won the race three years in a row between 2007 and 2009 and is the most successful trainer of the race still plying his trade, having saddled the winner four times in total.

However, the leading trainer in the Gold Cup winners list is Tom Dreaper, who counts Arkle’s treble amongst his five Gold Cup victories.

It is no surprise then that Arkle’s jockey Pat Taffe is the winning-most jockey with four wins and he took the trophy home in all but one year between 1964-68.

Ireland have dominated the Gold Cup winners list in recent years with the prize heading to the Emerald Isle in the last five renewals and eight of the last 10, while Nicky Henderson has trained two Gold Cup winners, Long Run and Bobs Worth.

You can bet on who will add their name to the Cheltenham Gold Cup winners list with Coral while below we have a list of every single Gold Cup winner since 1924.
