Glorious Goodwood Tips: Stradivarius on-song again in the Goodwood Cup?
Published:Betting preview and tips for Goodwood day one
One of the most exciting festivals in the whole racing calendar gets underway this afternoon with day one from Glorious Goodwood.
The ITV cameras will be parked up on the West Sussex Downs from 1:30pm to capture four high-quality contests, including the Goodwood Cup and the Lennox Stakes. The Coral News Team has got picks for those contests, and the remaining trio of races, in their ITV Racing Tips…
On-song Strad once again
It’s difficult to make a case against Stradivarius in the Goodwood Cup. John Gosden’s stable star caused a shock in the event last year but has since confirmed that form with victories in the Yorkshire Cup and Ascot Gold Cup this season.
Granted, he’s a short price for this year’s renewal. But he’s a short price for a reason. The four-year-old is facing weaker opponents, can handle the ground and is proven over course and distance. Even without regular jockey Frankie Dettori in the saddle, Stradivarius is comfortably the one to beat.
Sir Dancealot up for the Lennox?
Before the main event at 3:35pm there’s the small matter of the Group 2 Lennox Stakes at 3pm. There are a number of interesting contenders pencilled in for the 7f test, but it’s Sir Dancealot who gets the nod here.
David Elsworth’s raider returned to form with victory in the Criterion Stakes at Newmarket in June and followed that up with a creditable fourth in the July Cup. The four-year-old should enjoy the extra furlong afforded to him here, while the booking of the experienced Gerald Mosse is another positive. Tip Two Win provides the main danger.
Johnston over the Rainbow?
We like a challenge. So trying to find the winner of the opening race at Glorious Goodwood is right up our street. No horse has won this race at odds shorter than 8/1 in the last decade.
That makes Rainbow Rebel a hugely attractively proposition for Mark Johnston. The trainer has landed this contest four times since 2009, including in 2012, 2014 and 2016. His fancy this year looks well-placed to continue that attractive looking pattern.
The son of Acclamation has progressed well this term and can land the four-timer off a workable mark in spite of a difficult draw.
Glorious Goodwood tips:
