Glorious Goodwood Preview: Can Stradivarius make Goodwood Cup history?

We take a look at the key races on Day One of the Festival
Racing is back in full swing and this week sees one of the biggest events in the calendar return as Glorious Goodwood gets underway.
We’ve got five thrilling days of racing to look forward to, starting with a mouth-watering opening day as Stradivarius looks to win the Goodwood Cup for an historic fourth consecutive year.
Meanwhile, the Lennox Stakes is the other feature event on a bumper eight-race card.
Ahead of the action, we’ve taken a look at the key runners and riders on the opening day of Glorious Goodwood.

Ryan Moore’s Battleground looks one to beat after winning impressively in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot. He should improve in just his third outing post-lockdown and he heads the betting after being well backed.
Despite Battleground’s potential, Devious Company could pose a problem. After winning twice at Haydock, he improved to take second in Superlative Stakes at Newmarket earlier this month.
An outsider with a chance is King Zain, with Frankie Dettori taking the reins. He struggled when stepping up in class at Newmarket but he showed potential with a strong debut at Kempton.
Despite a slow 2020 so far, Sir Dancealot is targeting a third successive Lennox Stakes triumph. Gerald Mosse’s ride looked promising in the July Cup at Newmarket last time out.
But he’ll face stiff competition from likely favourite Space Blues, who has gone from strength to strength after a strong 2019 and landed a comfortable win in the Prix de la Porte at Longchamp last time out.
Safe Voyage will also be a contender after staying well to win a Listed event at Epsom on his last outing.
All eyes will be on Stradivarius, who is looking to follow up a third successive Ascot Gold Cup win with an historic fourth Goodwood Cup in a row.
Irish horse Santiago will be the likeliest contender in a small field. Ryan Moore’s ride won the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot before securing the Irish Derby eight days later.
Meanwhile, Nayef Road will have a point to prove after being well beaten by Stradivarius at Ascot and Eagles By Day is on form after winning a Listed race at York 10 days ago.
