Favourites expected to go in at Newcastle

We focus on matters at Newcastle where a competitive evening gets going on the all-weather course from 5.45pm under the lights. 5.45pm Newcastle – Fair Loch
The market has Brian Ellison’s vastly-experienced nine-year-old gelding picked, and I reckon they are on to a good thing there. He was runner-up over course and distance earlier this month, beaten into second by Zakatal. The winning distance was marked down as a neck, and a similar effort will see him improve a place. The form of that race has worked out well, and he doesn’t face anything that’ll cause major concern here.
6.15pm Newcastle – Signe
Backed like losing isn’t an option, but I expect the selection to live up to the pre-race hype. Impressive breeding, she won on debut at this track last month and was noted for sticking to her task at the business end of the race when things got serious. If connections are correct there is plenty of improvement to come, and we should see the next leg here. Up against stiffer opposition, but looks more than a match.
7.15pm Newcastle – Marqoom
This represents a bit of a gamble as we get in on the three-year-old’s debut, but it is expected to pay-off. Another from a really impressive line, punters can take confidence from the fact the betting market has been so eager to support him. That’s a big tip in itself for me, and on paper he is the best of the bunch here. Owners shelled out a lot of money for him, and will be wanting to see early signs of his promise, as do we all.
8.15pm Newcastle – Royal Request
Another shorty, but another who deserves to be for me. The jolly in the lucky last looks to have been given the perfect opportunity to get her head in front at the second time of asking, after finishing runner-up on debut last week. Beaten a head by Magic Approach at Wolves that day, it’s telling that they have her out again so quickly, and in with such a weak looking field. It’s obvious they want to get things moving with this promising filly.
