Four Premier League debut scorer shouts to look out for
Published:We’re counting down until the Premier League season kicks off here at Coral! Previously looking at the five greatest foreign players, we now cast our gaze forward to this term and who might make a goal-grabbing debut?
Our football experts put their heads together and came up with four scorer shouts we think can cap their bow by being on target.
Roberto Firmino
Don’t let proven Premier League performer Christian Benteke overshadow the other signings made by Liverpool. There is a lot to like about rising Brazilian star Firmino, who is likely to be his main supply line.
It would do him a disservice, however, to say he doesn’t have goals in him. Firmino was Bundesliga breakout talent of 2013/14 during his time at Hoffenheim, and has struck four times in 10 Samba Boys caps.
He’s played as a foil for Neymar, one of the best in the world, so knows how to occupy space behind a player feared by opposition defenders. Firmino is well worth a wager at 6/4 anytime to make a brilliant scoring bow against Stoke City, live on Sky Sports Super Sunday from 16:00 BST.
Swansea City have a tough opening assignment away at reigning and defending champions Chelsea come Saturday teatime live on Sky Sports but, if their time in the top flight so far is any indicator, they will not allow the established English heavyweights to run roughshod over them.
Ghana international attacker Andre Ayew is a real coup for the south Wales side, having played elite European football for Marseille and in the Africa Cup of Nations final this past winter.
Although this encounter could be more about a first Blues start for Radamel Falcao, Ayew has a tasty 10/3 price in the anytime market, which must be considered.
Manchester United’s home game with Tottenham kicks off the Premier League season at 12:45 BST on BTSport. One of several star attractions to look out for is deadly Dutch attacker Depay, who was leading scorer in the Eredivisie as PSV Eindhoven took the title last term.
Bastian Schweinsteiger may be the biggest name brought to Old Trafford this summer, but Depay is the one that can contribute most in the final third of their five summer signings. A return of 28 goals from 40 games on the wing is not a fluke. Depay is thus pretty decent value to strike first on his debut at 5/1.
Our last scorer shout is in a non-televised game but, like Depay, ex-PSV player Wijnaldum played a huge part in their domestic Dutch success last term. Scoring 14 goals bombing on from midfield, as well as making as many assists, saw him named Netherlands footballer of the year.
Now with Newcastle United, wily Wijnaldum has been given similar freedom by Steve McClaren during pre-season, and should relish his duel with compatriot and fellow new signing Jordy Clasie of Southampton.
Anytime odds of 2/1 are tasty, especially as new Magpies manager McClaren has been using a midfield diamond which will allow Wijnaldum to continue to get forward.
