Four outside shouts for US Open
Women’s tennis is starting to get interesting, and the US Open ante post odds on the next Grand Slam may give punters some early value if you’re prepared to take a longer-term punt.
This year’s Grand Slams have far from gone world number one Serena Williams’ way, so who could step up and challenge the American at her home major?

Monica Puig
Puerto Rican tennis talent Monica Puig is yet to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final in her career to date, but that didn’t stop the Caribbean competitor from winning women’s singles Gold at the Olympics.
Puig’s performances against the elite of WTA Tour tennis in Rio – only five top seeds missed the Games – have surely put her in the frame to kick on and reach the business end of the next major, the US Open, on a similar hard surface.
Why is Puig betting worth investing in? Well, she’s in-form. An Olympics hitlist that includes French Open champion Garbine Muguruza, two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova and Australian Open holder Angelique Kerber is impressive.

Johanna Konta
Sydney-born Great Britain representative Johanna Konta went down to eventual Olympic champion Angelique Kerber and has played her best tennis on hard courts this year.
Konta’s amazing run to the Australian Open semi-finals at the beginning of the season shows why her game is best suited to such a surface.
This has also set her up to be a WTA top 20 player, with Konta winning her first Tour title beating Venus Williams in the Stanford Classic final stateside in July.
If it’s a patriotic punt you’re after, then, US Open ante post odds of 40/1 say Konta can capture a maiden Grand Slam in New York.
Madison Keys
For all her promise and potential, underlined by a fourth place finish at the Olympics, American youngster Madison Keys is still just 21.
Much of the USA’s hopes will be transferred over to Keys once the Williams sisters finally hang up their rackets, and that means pressure.
With Keys you get good results here and there, beating 2012 Wimbledon finalist Agnieszka Radwanska by losing just five games at last year’s US Open, for example.
If she can put performances together on the big stage, Keys could well live up to odds of 14/1 to flourish at Flushing Meadows and is among tennis tips for this tournament.
Belinda Bencic
Switzerland’s teenage talent Belinda Bencic reached the US Open quarter-finals two years ago, beating the likes of Kerber and Jelena Jankovic en route to the last eight.
Although yet to replicate that run at another Grand Slam since, Bencic remains the brightest prospect for her country when men’s tennis legend Roger Federer finally calls time on his career.
With links to Martina Hingis, who she should’ve partnered in the Olympics women’s doubles tournament before withdrawing due to injury, Bencic has already had some top tuition with her racket.
It is only a matter of time before the youngster makes a big splash at a Slam, and a rested Bencic will be a danger at 28/1.
