Plenty of clubs could lose stars on 30th June

The Premier League is finally back and we find ourselves in the unusual position of having domestic football to watch over the summer.

While we’re usually treated to an international tournament, or forced to find something else to do for three months, the suspended campaign will resume on 17th June behind closed doors.

However, some player contracts expire at the end of June, which means clubs could lose members of their squad before the season has finished.

It’s expected that many of these players will sign short-term deals to ensure clubs aren’t left short for the remaining matches.

But even so, there are plenty of big names whose futures are uncertain ahead of next season and we’ve taken a closer look at their situations.

Jan Vertonghen

Rewind a few seasons and Vertonghen was among the Premier League’s best centre-backs and an expiring contract would have seen him coveted by Europe’s biggest clubs.

But while he’s still a very competent defender, he’s edging towards the end of his career. The 33-year-old has been in and out of Tottenham’s starting line-up this season and reports have suggested the club have cooled talks of a new deal.

Whether it’s his age, wage demands or a combination of the two, Vertonghen looks set to end his eight-year spell in north London and he’s been linked with a number of Italian clubs, including Inter Milan, where he’d join former Spurs team-mate Christian Eriksen.

David Luiz

The Brazilian epitomises the term maverick and eyebrows were raised last summer when Arsenal turned to him to fix their defensive woes. Luiz only signed a one-year deal when he joined from Chelsea and there have been suggestions that he could quit the club this summer.

It seems Arsenal are unwilling to pay astronomical wages to a player not necessarily considered a guaranteed starter. Yet while it appeared Luiz was set to leave the Emirates, reports this week claim the 33-year-old is happy to re-sign on reduced terms.

Luiz has started every Premier League game since Mikel Arteta took charge in December but with William Saliba returning from a loan spell at Saint-Etienne, there will be plenty of competition for places at the back.

Adam Lallana

Injuries have forced Lallana to become a bit-part player for Liverpool in the last few seasons and at 32, the midfielder is likely considering one final move to ensure playing time in the final stage of his career.

Despite his fitness issues, Lallana has still appeared 15 times in the Premier League this season and Jurgen Klopp no doubt sees him as a useful squad player, particularly with Liverpool likely to challenge on all fronts again next term.

But half the Premier League will fancy their chances of signing him if he decides to move on and with rumours of Leicester sniffing around, Lallana may value playing time over anything else.

Ryan Fraser

Fraser hasn’t exactly had a fall from grace but having gone from being linked with mega-money moves to Arsenal and Liverpool to scoring just once for Bournemouth this season, the Scottish winger may fancy a change of scenery.

The Cherries are desperate to keep him and are continuing to pursue negotiations and extend his stay. But they’ll be concerned that Fraser has recently switched agents to Paul Martin, who also represents Arsenal boss Arteta.

The 26-year-old has once again been linked with a switch to the Emirates, as well as their north London rivals Tottenham, and after a difficult year on the south coast, Fraser may feel a move is exactly what he needs to rediscover some form.

Willian

After a trophy-laden seven-year spell at Chelsea, Willian is expected to leave the west London club this summer. The Brazilian was subject to interest from Barcelona a year ago and has been linked with Real Madrid this time around.

But it seems he’s not in Frank Lampard’s plans, with the Blues boss preferring to plan for the future with younger players. Pedro is also out of contract, meaning Chelsea could be left short of options out wide if both were to leave.

However, they’ll be keen to get back in the transfer market having been banned from signing players last summer. Willian has been linked with a switch to Tottenham to link up with former boss Mourinho, having previously rejected Spurs to complete his move to Stamford Bridge.

Who else is out of contract?

The Premier League will say goodbye to one of its greatest ever midfielders this summer as David Silva looks set to leave Manchester City. The Spaniard announced last summer that this season would be his last at the club and he’s been linked with a move to MLS.

Elsewhere, Ben Foster is approaching the end of his deal at Watford. Despite his age, the 37-year-old has enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career and the Hornets will be keen to hang on to him. The former England international is reportedly being chased by Celtic, as is Joe Hart, whose deal at Burnley is coming to an end.

There could also be movement for several other former England players, with Leighton Baines, Andy Carroll, Phil Jagielka, Nathaniel Clyne and Aaron Lennon all set to be free agents, while Wes Morgan, Pablo Zabaleta and Shane Long are also in the final month of their contracts.
