Szymon Piorek’s Spain v Poland preview: ‘Hard to see anything other than a Spain victory’
Our Matchday Squad journalist will be covering Poland throughout Euro 2020
Defeat against Slovakia was a huge blow for Poland. Everybody was expecting an easy win, but Paulo Sousa’s players played terribly. They again repeated the same mistakes, like conceding a goal from a set piece. 5 from 10 goals conceded under Paulo Sousa are from set pieces.
All the leaders of the Polish team let their nation down. Wojciech Szczesny conceded an own goal, Grzegorz Krychowiak picked up two yellow cards and was sent off. Robert Lewandowski didn’t even have a shot on target. His record in big tournaments is 12 matches and only 2 goals.
All the media and fans criticized the Polish players and coach after the opening game. Nobody believes that they have any chance of getting through from the group now, although Sousa says that we need to stay positive because we still have two matches.
Against Spain there will be at least one change in Polish line up: Krychowiak is suspended and probably either Pawel Dawidowicz or Jakub Moder will replace him. Lukasz Fabianski, second choice goalkeeper, is out because of injury. It is hard to see anything other than a Spain victory.
