This season’s first Champions League semi-final takes place this evening and the game will provide one side the opportunity to reach the final for the first time.
RB Leipzig and Paris Saint-Germain go head-to-head in Benfica and both sides will be forgiven for getting nosebleeds as a result of progressing this far.
The German side claimed a scalp as they defeated Atletico Madrid in the previous round, while PSG enjoyed a stunning late comeback to break Atalanta’s hearts.
But only one of them can reach the final and we’ve outlined everything you need to know ahead of the game.
PSG are the odds-on favourites to progress this evening and can be backed at 2/5 to qualify, while they’re 3/4 to win the match in 90 minutes.
Meanwhile, Leipzig are the outsiders at 13/4 to win the match or 15/8 to qualify by any means. The draw after 90 minutes is 16/5.
Both sides conceded in their last game and PSG to win and BTTS is 2/1. Those hoping for a goalfest can back over 3.5 goals at 5/4.
Neymar struggled in front of goal against Atalanta and he’ll want to put his performance behind him. The Brazilian is 7/2 to open the scoring and 33/1 to net a hat-trick.
Kylian Mbappe could start on the bench again and he’s priced at 10/3 to be the final goalscorer.
For Leipzig, Patrik Schick is the likeliest matchwinner and the striker is going at 12/5 to score anytime.
Both sides left it late in the last round and will be full of confidence going into tonight’s clash. Leipzig waited until the 88th minute to sink Atletico Madrid last Thursday, the day after PSG scored twice in added time to overcome Atalanta.
In truth, the French side should have had the tie sealed up much earlier. Despite Atalanta’s resilience, PSG had countless opportunities, two of which were uncharacteristically spurned by Neymar.
But the former Barcelona man will no doubt have put his torrid evening in front of goal behind him and Leipzig are firmly in his sights. After a season blighted by injuries, the Champions League title he’s been desperately seeking since joining the Ligue 1 outfit is well and truly within reach.
And he won’t have to do it alone. Mauro Icardi will offer ample support up top and Thomas Tuchel will be buoyed by Mbappe’s showing off the bench.
Whether the Frenchman will be fit enough to start remains to be seen but there aren’t many more terrifying prospects for a tiring defence than Mbappe preparing to come on.
Yet Leipzig have threats of their own and have more than enough to trouble PSG, even without star man Timo Werner, who’s made the move to Chelsea.
Marcel Sabitzer and Schick have bagged 26 goals between them this season and the Bundesliga side have beaten Spurs twice in this competition, as well as Atletico.
They also boast a mean defence, with only Bayern Munich conceding more league goals than them last term.
Leipzig made their first appearance in the Champions League in the 2017/18 season and reaching the final at the second time of asking would represent a fairytale beyond their wildest dreams.
Yet PSG, who have not reached this stage this century, could finally be on the brink of achieving what their Qatari owners set out to do when they acquired the club in 2011.
