Tottenham v Chelsea betting tips: Blues target London derby history
Preview and odds for Sunday’s Premier League clash
There is a big London derby in prospect on Sunday and we have examined the odds to find some Tottenham v Chelsea betting tips.
Tottenham are smarting from last week’s 3-0 defeat at Crystal Palace, while European champions Chelsea hope to continue their unbeaten start after beating Aston Villa 3-0 in their latest Premier League clash.
Sunday’s match, which takes place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, is live on Sky Sports and kicks off at 4.30pm.
Tottenham v Chelsea match odds
There may be a touch of the ‘emperor’s new clothes’ about Tottenham. Their opening-day defeat of champions Manchester City came against a short-handed and under-cooked City side.
They also struggled to beat Wolves and Watford, despite winning all three games 1-0. They are averaging just 9.5 shots per game in the Premier League under Nuno Espírito Santo this season and the wheels appeared to come off against Crystal Palace, as they were trounced 3-0.
They have missed key players such as Giovanni Lo Celso, Cristian Romero and Davinson Sanchez, and with doubts over Heung-min Son (calf strain) and Eric Dier, who missed Thursday’s Europa Conference League trip to Rennes, Spurs are 19/5 to win.
Only twice before have Tottenham started a Premier League campaign with three home wins out of three, but they have won eight of their last 10 league games at home.
Chelsea, who beat Zenit 1-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday, have won each of their last five away league London derbies – they’ve never won six in a row on the road before.
Yet they were far from convincing against Aston Villa who, despite losing 3-0, had plenty of chances, with Chelsea keeper Edouard Mendy (pictured below) looking far from assured when the ball was put into the six-yard box.
There have been just two draws in the last 14 meetings and it is 5/2 that the game ends in a stalemate.
Tottenham v Chelsea head-to-head
Though Chelsea have won their last two Premier League away games against Tottenham – as many as in their previous 13 visits (D5 L6) – they last won three in a row at Spurs between April 2004 and August 2005.
The Blues won the corresponding fixture last season 1-0, having been earlier held to a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge.
Five of the last six meetings yielded less than three total goals and it is 7/10 for that trend to continue in the Tottenham v Chelsea betting tips.
Tottenham v Chelsea key battles
After netting three goals in his first four Premier League games against Chelsea, Tottenham striker Harry Kane has scored just once in his last eight in the competition against the Blues. He will fancy his chances against Mendy, however, and is 2/1 to score at any time.
However, Spurs fans may have to wait. For since coming to the Premier League with Wolves in 2018, Tottenham boss Nuno Espírito Santo has seen his side fail to score in the first half in 83 of his 118 games in charge, more than any other manager. It is 3/1 for Tottenham to score the first goal in the first half and 15/8 that they score the first goal in the match.
In contrast, Romelu Lukaku can’t stop scoring. He has netted four times in as many games and he will know that Tottenham have conceded more Premier League goals against Chelsea (103) than they have versus any other opponent.
