We’ve picked our five favourite strikes
With no sign of the Premier League returning anytimesoon, we’ve been looking back at the season so far.
We’ve seen thrilling matches, some big surprises and plenty ofstunning goals. In order of when they were scored, here are our five favourite strikesfrom the 2019/20 campaign so far:
Mohamed Salah (Liverpool vs Newcastle, September 14)
A goal that sums up the near-telepathic understandingbetween Liverpool’s attacking stars.
Mo Salah picks up the ball outside the penalty area andslips the ball through to Roberto Firmino. The Brazilian instantly swivels andflicks the ball back into Salah’s path, allowing the winger to dart into spaceand finish from a tight angle.
Firmino has only scored eight league goals himself thisterm, but moments like that show why he’s so important to the Reds.
Kevin De Bruyne (Newcastle United vs Manchester City,November 30)
What a goal. What a player.
With City struggling to find any rhythm against Newcastle, KevinDe Bruyne took matters into his own hands.
He brought down a headed clearance outside the box andthumped it in, with the ball smacking the crossbar before going in to make iteven sweeter.
Son Heung-Min (Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley, December 7)
When Son Heung-Min picked up the ball just outside theTottenham penalty area, Burnley won’t have been too concerned. The South Koreastar was nowhere near their goal, and they had plenty of bodies back.
But Son looked up and didn’t see many options on, so hestarted to run with the ball. Then he kept going. And going. Until suddenlyhe’d raced all the way up the pitch, leaving six defenders in his wake andkeeping his cool to slot home.
Gabriel Martinelli (Chelsea vs Arsenal, January 21)
Gabriel Martinelli has had a very impressive first season inEnglish football, but he really announced himself with his solo strike atStamford Bridge.
With Arsenal down to 10 men and trailing 2-0, it looked likethey were going to head back across London empty-handed.
That is, until Martinelli ran onto a clearance from a cornerand surged into the Chelsea half. After running virtually the length of thepitch, he still had the composure to give Kepa the eyes and slot into thebottom corner, inspiring Arsenal to come back and secure a draw.
Matej Vydra (Southampton vs Burnley, February 15)
Matej Vydra hasn’t seen too much action since joining Burnley, but he offered a reminder of what he could do with a superb strike against Southampton.
The 27-year-old took one touch to smartly bring a long balldown with his chest, another to get away from the defender, then a third tofire a rocket past the keeper.
As well as being his first top-flight goal since November2018, it also saw him become the first Burnley player to win the PremierLeague’s Goal of the Month award.
