Southampton v Leeds betting tips: Whites ending season in style
Preview and odds for Tuesday’s game
It is technically a dead-rubber at St Mary’s on Tuesday but games involving Leeds are usually anything but, with Marcelo Bielsa’s men eyeing a 59-point top-half finish.
They demolished Burnley on Saturday, while Southampton made light work of relegated Fulham and, though then can finish no higher than 12th, will want to atone for their 3-0 loss at Elland Road earlier in the season.
Tuesday’s match is live on Sky Sports and kicks off at 6.00pm as we highlight a few potential Southampton v Leeds betting tips.
Southampton v Leeds match odds
Having dispelled talk of a ‘Bielsa burnout’ Leeds look anything but ready for the season to end. They have lost one of their last nine and if anything are coming into their best form of the season, barring their 2-0 reverse at Brighton at the start of the month.
They were excellent in beating Tottenham recently and then hit Burnley for four in another convincing show, Rodrigo coming off the bench to add two delightful goals to go with earlier strikes from Mateusz Klich and Jack Harrison.
It was Leeds’ ninth win on the road this season and they head south priced at 29/20 to make it double figures away from Elland Road.
Southampton’s 3-1 win over Fulham saw Che Adams, Nathan Tella and Theo Walcott all get on the scoresheet, but after a strong start their season has faded a little and they are 17/10 to sign off at home with a win.
Southampton v Leeds head-to-head
Leeds are looking to do the double over Saints after beating them 3-0 at Elland Road in February, when Patrick Bamford, Stuart Dallas and Raphinha were on target.
Saints started with Danny Ings on the bench that night and carried little goal threat so will need to fix that, particularly against a Leeds side which has silenced its defensive critics in the second half of the season, their back four marshalled brilliantly by Diego Llorente.
Memories of Leeds’ 4-3 win from 3-0 down at St Mary’s in 2005 still linger at Elland Road, the late Liam Miller scoring the winner, and that remains their last victory at Southampton.
Leeds: Meslier, Ayling, Llorente, Struijk, Alioski, Raphinha, Dallas, Phillips, Klich, Harrison, Bamford.
Saints may keep things the same after their three-goal showing against Fulham. Jan Bendarek missed out with an ankle problem, while the departing Ryan Bertrand (calf) is out, as are Romeu (ankle) and Will Smallbone (knee).
Leeds boss Bielsa has to decide what to do with Rodrigo. The Spain man scored twice off the bench at Burnley, adding to his goal against Tottenham the week before, but it’s hard to see who he replaces. The same goes for captain Liam Cooper who found himself on the bench after suspension and injury.
Jack Harrison has been superb for Leeds this season, scoring eight goals and assisting the same amount. He will convert his three-season-long loan move from Manchester City to a permanent one this summer and is 8/1 to score first.
Kyle Walker-Peters will know he has a task on his hands to handle the former New York City man.
At the other end, Leeds made a play for Che Adams a year ago but failed to land their man, and he could be the player to test the in-form Llorente, priced at 7/1 to score first.
