Our 2019/20 Premier League Team of the Season

We’ve given our selection for this season’s top performers

It’s been another fantastic year of Premier League football – even if we don’t know how it’s going to finish yet. Are Liverpool finally set to end their 30-year title drought? Can they beat Manchester City’s record points tally of 100 in the process?

As well as that, can Chris Wilder lead Sheffield United to a European spot in their first season back in the big time? Will we see Norwich City and Aston Villa drop straight back down to the Championship too?

Here, we’ve taken our first step into team management to select our Team of the Season. There’s just one condition – we’re only allowed one player per club!

Here’s what we’ve gone for…

Goalkeeper

Dean Henderson – Sheffield United

Our first choice regardless of club restrictions. Nick Pope may have more clean sheets, but Sheffield United are four points better off with a game in hand, conceding 15 fewer goals in the process.

That’s mainly down to the on-loan Henderson, who’s made 70 saves including one penalty stop from Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus.

Could he take the Manchester United number one spot from David De Gea next season? And could he claim the England starting spot for Euro 2021?

Right-back

Ricardo Pereira – Leicester City

Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold was possibly the obvious choice here, but we’re looking for a more defensively-minded player, and it’s Leicester’s Ricardo Pereira that gets our pick.

He’s attempted a league-high 119 tackles with a 57% success rate, keeping 10 clean sheets and conceding only 27 goals in his 28 appearances. Not only that, but he’s made 49 interceptions, 74 clearances and 171 recoveries too.

Pereira rivals Alexander-Arnold’s threat going forward too, with three goals this season.

Centre-back

Conor Coady – Wolves

The first of our two centre backs, both of which have the necessary leadership skills to keep the back four solid. We’ve gone with Conor Coady here with the Wolves captain quietly going about his business, but always reliable and solid as a rock.

With only 34 tackles attempted this season, that doesn’t sound a lot. But he’s won 65% of those, which is a great conversion rate. Wolves have only conceded 34 in 29 games too this season under his stewardship.

Coady always manages to get the best out of those around him too, and with Wolves challenging for a European spot this campaign, could he have caught the eye of Gareth Southgate?

Centre-back

Harry Maguire – Manchester United

The £80m man at the heart of Manchester United’s defence. In the middle of a turbulent campaign, Maguire was handed the captain’s armband and has since steadied the ship.

Eight clean sheets and only 30 goals conceded, with United 5th and only three points off the top four, it’s his defensive qualities and leadership skills that have helped carry them there.

Maguire beats off competition from the Leicester City pair of Jonny Evans and Caglar Soyuncu to fill this spot.

Left-back

Patrick van Aanholt – Crystal Palace

With the standout left-back in the league, Andrew Robertson, out of consideration, it was a choice between Lucas Digne and Patrick van Aanholt for us.

While Digne arguably offers more going forward, he’s a defensive liability at time, whereas Van Aanholt is quietly consistent at both.

Seven clean sheets and three goals, in comparison to Digne’s six shut out’s and no goals, plus 14 fewer team goals conceded, we’re giving the Dutchman the nod here.

Right-midfield/winger

Heung-Min Son – Tottenham Hotspur

Possibly the toughest spot to fill in the entire squad, we’ve gone with Heung-Min Son here. He’s not had his best season, but that coincides with Tottenham’s shortfalls too. Are they just not working under Jose Mourinho’s guidance?

After Harry Kane was ruled out, it seemed Son was carrying the North London side on his back. He grabbed nine goals and seven assists before a broken arm temporarily ended his campaign, but everything good about Spurs’ play, tended to come from Son.

Everton’s Richarlison and Norwich City’s Todd Cantwell are both worthy mentions, after they narrowly missed out here.

Centre-midfield

Kevin De Bruyne – Manchester City

With only one spot open for a Manchester City addition, how could anyone look past the majestic Belgian?

This season alone, De Bruyne has registered eight goals and a whopping 16 assists. The Cityzens maestro was on course to smash the 20-assist record set by Arsenal’s Thierry Henry in the 2002/03 campaign.

Is there a better midfielder in world football at this moment in time?

Centre-midfield

Mason Mount – Chelsea

On loan at Championship side Derby County under Frank Lampard last season, Mason Mount made the step up to the Premier League alongside the Chelsea legend and current head coach.

Few expected Mount to get a game at Chelsea this season, even after pre-season, but the 21-year-old grabbed the opportunity with both hands and has made a starting position his own.

Six goals and four assists might not sound a lot in comparison to Jack Grealish and his seven goals and six assists, but it’s the influence Mount has in the Chelsea side at such a young age which has made us plump for him. James Maddison was in our thoughts too, but narrowly missed out.

If Aston Villa weren’t in trouble at the wrong end of the table, Jack Grealish would be included. But as captain of a side in trouble, we just can’t justify including him.

Left-midfield/winger

Sadio Mane – Liverpool

Can you argue with our shout that Sadio Mane has been Liverpool’s player of the season? The Senegalese winger has stepped his game up this term, and it shows.

Mane has bagged 14 goals and seven assists in a campaign where the Reds are running away with the league. Constantly a threat with his pace and drive towards goal, his ball control has vastly improved from years gone by too.

Can Mane continue his fine form and make this the best season of his career?

Striker

Danny Ings – Southampton

Jamie Vardy was probably expected to feature in this XI, after all, he is currently the league’s top scorer with 19. But we’re going for Danny Ings, and for good reason.

In a team with far fewer attacking options and resources, Ings has managed to grab 15 goals. Not only that, but the Saints were in free fall at the start of the campaign, loitering around the relegation zone for much of this season.

But it’s Ings’ goals that have fired the South Coast club seven points clear of the drop. With that influence, it’s hard to ignore the Englishman.

Striker

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Arsenal

With just two fewer goals than Vardy, whilst playing in an under-performing Arsenal side, we think it’s the Gabonese striker who takes the final spot in our team.

Last season’s Golden Boot winner has been one of the most coveted strikers for years and has proved his class since his arrival at Arsenal in January 2018. With 17 in 26 appearances this season, almost half of the North London’s sides goals have come from Auba.

Alongside goalkeeper Bernd Leno, who narrowly missed out to Henderson in our selection, Aubameyang has been one of the Gunners only glimmers of hope this term. Will he still be donning an Arsenal shirt next campaign?
