Newcastle v Sheffield United betting tips: Goals flowing for Magpies
Preview and odds for Wednesday’s Premier League match
Newcastle are ending the season in decent form and will be keen to put on a show for their returning fans in their last home match of the campaign.
Steve Bruce has guided the Magpies to Premier League safety but is still not exactly Mr Popular in the eyes of the Toon Army and will be desperate to avoid a third straight home defeat.
His former team Sheffield United have long since been relegated but are still playing for pride under Paul Heckingbottom as shown by their weekend win at Everton.
Wednesday’s match is live on Sky Sports and kicks off at 6.00pm as we highlight a few potential Newcastle v Sheffield United betting tips.
Newcastle v Sheffield United match odds
Newcastle may have been beaten on Friday night but a 4-3 defeat against Manchester City was no disgrace.
It took their goal tally to 15 in the last seven matches during which time they have beaten Burnley, West Ham and Leicester while draws with Tottenham and Liverpool were impressive for a team which has been fighting for survival for most of the season.
Newcastle need to win their final two matches to improve on last season’s tally of 44 points and are 3/4 to stay on track to do so with victory here.
Sheffield United are 15/4 to win back-to-back games for the first time this season but have failed to find the net in 11 of their 18 games, with Daniel Jebbison’s early winner at Everton only their eighth away goal.
A Newcastle win to nil is available at 21/10 while they are 2/1 to win by more than one goal.
Newcastle v Sheffield United head-to-head
It has been a miserable campaign for the Blades and they had to wait until January 12 for their first league win of the season, which came against Newcastle at Bramall Lane.
Club captain Billy Sharp came on as a second-half substitute and showed all of his experience to remain calm and score a 73rd-minute spot-kick to earn a 1-0 win.
Four of United’s six victories this season have been 1-0 and they are 14/1 to win by that scoreline again.
The result in January’s meeting was the least Chris Wilder’s team deserved after dominating against a negative and unimaginative Newcastle side who had Ryan Fraser sent off just before half-time.
Newcastle at least did the double over the Blades last season, winning 2-0 in South Yorkshire and 3-0 on Tyneside.
Previous XI
Newcastle: Dubravka, Dummett, Krafth, Fernandez, Shelvey, Ritchie, Murphy, Almiron, Willock, Joelinton, Saint-Maximin.
Sheffield United: Ramsdale, Baldock, Stevens, Basham, Egan, Robinson, Fleck, Norwood, Osborn, Jebbison, McGoldrick.
Key battles
Sheffield United have had nothing to lose in the last few weeks of the season and one player to benefit has been Jebbison.
Having been on loan at National League North side Chorley earlier this season, he became the Premier League’s youngest scorer on full debut aged 17 years and 309 days with a goal just seven minutes into his first start against Everton.
His enthusiasm and work rate could make him a handful for the Newcastle defence and he is 13/5 to score again while Joe Willock is the main in form for the hosts and is 15/8 to net for a sixth successive match.
