Man City v Man Utd betting tips, preview and odds

United’s recent revival will be put to the test by the defending champions this weekend as we pick out some Man City v Man Utd betting tips.

The Red Devils have put a slow start to the season behind them with four successive Premier League wins but the odds suggest that will be ended by their city rivals in the Manchester derby.

Sunday’s match at the Etihad Stadium kicks off at 2pm and is live on Sky Sports.

Man City v Man Utd form

It says a lot about City’s expected dominance of the Premier League this season that United are priced at 7/1 to win the derby despite their recent good run of results.

The bookies could have been tempted to offer double those odds when United slumped to a 4-0 defeat at Brentford in their first away game of the season but their fortunes have quickly improved.

Home wins against Liverpool and Arsenal, either side of victories at Southampton and Leicester, have lifted the mood at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag has not been afraid to make some big decisions, leaving Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench, while several new signings have hit the ground running.

They can head to the Etihad full of confidence and City have proved they are not invincible with draws at Aston Villa and Newcastle.

City also had to come from 2-0 down at half-time to beat Crystal Palace so United might be worth taking a chance on given the odds available and the visitors to avoid defeat at 11/5 is the first of our Man City v Man Utd betting tips.

Man City v Man Utd head-to-head

The Etihad has been a relatively happy hunting ground for United in recent years, although City did the double in last season’s Manchester derbies including a 4-1 victory at this venue.

Prior to that, they had won five and drawn one of their last seven visits so United certainly have history of defying the odds in this fixture.

City have had at least 60 per cent possession in each of the last four meetings so can expect to dominate the ball as usual but United are a threat on the counterattack as Arsenal found out to their cost recently.

In Erling Haaland, City undoubtedly have the most fearsome striker in the Premier League but injuries in defence are a worry, with John Stones limping off for England on Nations League duty.

That suggests a high-scoring game so both teams to score, over 2.5 goals and either team to win is an option in the #YourCall market at 5/4.

Goalscorer odds

The best hope for United is that Haaland returns from international duty feeling fatigued having played the full 90 minutes in back-to-back Nations League games for Norway.

He failed to find the net in Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat at home to Serbia, having previously scored in eight successive matches for club and country.

The last time he was blanked playing for City was on August 13 against Bournemouth, since when he has scored 12 goals in seven matches.

It is little wonder therefore that he is the 15/8 favourite to open the scoring and just 4/9 to find the net. For bigger Man City v Man Utd odds, Haaland is 21/10 for a brace and 7/1 for his third hat-trick of the season.

United may not have a striker of the same class as Haaland but new signing Antony scored on his Premier League debut and is 4/1 to do so again on Sunday.

Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho were not involved with their country so should be feeling refreshed and determined to get back in favour with Gareth Southgate before he names his England World Cup squad.

Rashford was on target against both Liverpool and Arsenal and is 13/5 to add City to that list, while Sancho’s three goals this season were all the first goal of the match and he is 18/1 to do so again as the last of our Man City v Man Utd betting tips.

Team news

City are without John Stones after the defender suffered a hamstring injury while on duty with England.

Summer signing Kalvin Phillips is also sidelined after undergoing shoulder surgery during the international break.

Rashford and Anthony Martial have returned to training for United but under-fire Harry Maguire will be absent after the centre-back picked up a knock during the international break with England.
