Preview and odds for Sunday’s Premier League clash

The high-flying Hammers head to Villa Park in the Premier League as we seek out some Aston Villa v West Ham betting tips.

Villa beat Manchester United at Old Trafford last month but have since suffered three successive defeats while West Ham’s win over Tottenham was followed by a League Cup triumph over holders Manchester City in midweek.

Sunday’s match, which takes place at Villa Park, kicks off at 4.30pm and is live on Sky Sports.

Aston Villa v West Ham match odds

Defeats at Tottenham and Arsenal, plus a 3-2 home loss by midlands rivals Wolves sandwiched in between, has left Villa in 13th place in the Premier League with 10 points from nine games.

They last had a longer losing sequence in March 2020 when dropping four on the bounce and they are 17/10 to beat West Ham.

There is a maddening inconsistency about Dean Smith’s side, who have looked excellent at times this season – a 3-0 home win over Everton and a 1-0 win at Manchester United spring to mind – yet they have been lacklustre at times and guilty of some poor defending.

They are lively going forward, with Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins always looking likely to create something out of the ordinary.

So West Ham must be on their guard if they are to have any hope of extending their unbeaten away run to eight games (W5 D2). They last had a longer run on the road in 1986 (unbeaten in eight).

The Hammers are 6/4 to win their third away game in succession, having won at Leeds and Everton.

Last Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Tottenham put them fourth in the table with 17 points, making it their best start to a Premier League season since 2015-16.

Capping off a good week for the Londoners, they knocked Manchester City out of the League Cup on Wednesday, going through to the quarter-finals on penalties after a 0-0 draw at the London Stadium.

There have been five draws in the last 11 meetings between Villa and the Hammers and it is 12/5 the game ends in a stalemate this time.

Aston Villa v West Ham head-to-head

West Ham won this fixture 3-1 last season and are looking to pick up consecutive away league wins against Villa for the first time since a run of three between 1965 and 1967.

Villa are winless in their last six Premier League meetings with West Ham (D3 L3) since a 1-0 home triumph in May 2015.

West Ham have not beaten Villa on three consecutive occasions since 1967 and it is 1/2 Smith’s side gain at least a point in the Double Chance market.

Both sides scored in their last three meetings – there has not been a run of four games where both sides scored since August 1999 to April 2003, when nine consecutive encounters saw both sides net.

It is 5/4 that one side fails to score this time.

Aston Villa v West Ham key battles

Aaron Cresswell may be one of the most prolific set-piece takers in England and West Ham are a big side, adept at using their height in the opposition penalty area.

Yet Watkins could give the West Ham left-back a good test if he is allowed to drift into a wider position.

The former Brentford man has proved his worth in the Premier League and is often the catalyst for Villa’s good approach play. He is 21/10 to score at any time.

While Ings has yet to score in nine games against the Hammers, one could argue a marksman of his quality is over-due a goal and he is 6/4 to net on Sunday.
