Preview and odds for Wednesday’s World Cup qualifier

England continue their quest to qualify for next winter’s World Cup finals in Qatar as they travel to Poland and we have examined the odds to find some Poland v England betting tips.

Gareth Southgate’s England side have taken maximum points from five games, while Poland sit second, five points behind the Three Lions.

Wednesday’s match, which takes place at the National Stadium in Warsaw, kicks off at 5pm BST and is live on ITV.

Poland v England match odds

Poland will hope to eat into England’s five-point lead at the top of World Cup qualifying Group I after their 7-1 win in San Marino on Sunday.

The Poles easily saw off Albania 4-1 last Thursday to leapfrog Hungary into second place in the group and a win over England would go a long way to securing at least a top-two finish.

Poland were a little unlucky not to claim a point when the teams last met at Wembley in March, with Harry Kane’s late goal handing the Three Lions a 2-1 win.

Poland are 9/2 to beat an England side that have kept 11 clean sheets in their 14 games in 2021.

England have taken maximum points from five games and a win in Warsaw would put them on the cusp of qualification.

Gareth Southgate’s men defeated Hungary 4-0 in Budapest last Thursday, before demolishing overmatched Andorra 4-0 at Wembley on Sunday.

They have conceded just one goal in five qualifying games and have scored 16. England are 4/6 to win in Warsaw, while the draw is on offer at 13/5.

Poland v England head-to-head

England have not lost to Poland since a 2-0 defeat in Corzow in June 1973, a result that meant England needed to win the return leg at Wembley to qualify for the 1974 World Cup.

They drew 1-1 thanks to the heroics of Poland keeper Jan Tomaszweski yet in the 16 subsequent meetings, England have won 11 and drawn five. Those five draws all came in Poland and it is 4/1 that the game ends in a score draw, as it did the last time the sides met in Warsaw.

In each one of the eight clashes between the two in Poland, there have been fewer than three total goals scored and it is 4/6 that this trend continues.

England have won eight of the last 10 meetings (D2) and six of those clashes saw each side score. It is 21/20 that both find the net this time in Poland v England betting tips.

Poland v England team news

On Sunday, Southgate made 11 changes to the side that faced Hungary, but most of those rested against Andorra are expected to return.

It did need the introduction of Harry Kane, Mason Mount and Jack Grealish against Andorra to unlock a stubborn defence, however.

Jadon Sancho has returned to Manchester United after picking up an injury in training. He missed both games against Hungary and Andorra.

Poland v England key battles

Robert Lewandowksi (pictured above) has been Poland’s talisman for quite some time now. The Bayern Munich striker, who is 9/5 to score at any time, will play off the shoulder of Harry Maguire and is not about to be bullied by the Manchester United defender.

Grzegorz Krychowiak sits deep in midfield for Poland, but got himself on the scoresheet against Albania and he is likely to come up against Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips, who have been able to protect the England back four with growing confidence, yet get forward when necessary.

England should be good for a goal against a dangerous Poland side and it is 3/1 for the Three Lions to win but concede.

Two of their 20 meetings have ended goalless – both in Poland – and it is 15/2 for the game to end 0-0.
