Preview and odds for Sunday’s Premier League battle

The Magpies beat the Hammers twice last season and they clash on the opening weekend so we have studied the odds to find some Newcastle v West Ham betting tips.

Newcastle dented West Ham’s Champions League aspirations last season and finished 12th. The Hammers finished sixth, qualifying for the Europa League group stage.

Sunday’s match, which takes place at St James’ Park, is live on Sky Sports and kicks off at 2pm BST.

Newcastle v West Ham match odds

Newcastle beat West Ham in the opening game of last season and then put a spanner in their top-four hopes by beating them at St James’ Park during the run-in as West Ham finished two points off a Champions League spot.

Newcastle are 9/4 to beat the Hammers on Sunday and are 11/4 to be relegated.

Barring the probable arrival of Joe Willock from Arsenal, Newcastle have done little in the transfer market and that will worry supporters.

Steve Bruce has worked wonders with very little support from the board and while the boost of the Newcastle faithful returning to the stands will lift his side, the Magpies are not the defensive force they were under Rafa Benitez.

Newcastle could also be without star players Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin for the clash with West Ham.

David Moyes’s Hammers over-achieved last season and have enjoyed a positive pre-season, winning five and drawing two of their matches, and they lost only one of their last five away league games of the 2020-21 season.

Alphonse Areola, West Ham United, Newcastle v West Ham betting tips

There has been very little transfer activity, with goalkeeper Alphonse Areola (pictured above) joining from PSG on loan, while Felipe Anderson has departed for Lazio for a bargain £2.7million and Fabian Balbuena was handed a free transfer to Dynamo Moscow.

They are set to sign Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic for £14m, although there is still no sign of a recognised striker to partner Michail Antonio.

In Newcastle v West Ham betting tips, the away win can be backed at 23/20 to win while the visitors are 8/11 to finish in the top half of the table and 5/1 for another top-six finish.

Newcastle v West Ham head-to-head

Newcastle are a thorn in West Ham’s side with the Hammers managing just two victories against the Magpies in the last 10 meetings and they have not won any of the last five clashes (L4 D1).

There has been one draw in the last 14 meetings and the draw is available at 23/10.

Newcastle have lost just once at home to West Ham since 2013 and they are 8/13 to win or draw the game on the Double Chance market.

Seven of the last 10 meetings yielded three goals or more and over 2.5 goals can be added to Newcastle v West Ham betting tips at 20/23.

Newcastle v West Ham team news

Wilson has a happy knack of scoring against West Ham but he has been nursing a hamstring strain and was absent from a couple of friendlies. The Hammers’ chief tormentor would be a big loss for the home side should he not be fit.

Tricky winger Saint-Maximin is said to be suffering from an illness and has not featured for Newcastle since their second pre-season friendly of the summer at Doncaster. He could also be ruled out.

Newcastle v West Ham key battles

Keeping their respective sets of fans onside is the biggest battle both clubs will face this term.

On the pitch, the Magpies managed to keep only seven clean sheets in the Premier League last season, with just two of those on home soil.

Likewise, the Hammers were leaky at the back and they only managed five shut-outs on the road, conceding 11 times in their final seven away league matches.

Newcastle will be wary of the threat posed in the air by the visitors, who scored 16 times from set-pieces in the previous campaign, the most of any team in the division.

How Newcastle cope against Craig Dawson and Czech international Tomas Soucek from set-plays will go a long way to determining the outcome.

Newcastle are 13/10 to score the first goal and are 3/1 to keep a clean sheet.
