Preview and odds for West Ham v Newcastle

Important points are at stake at both ends of the Premier League table as we study the odds to highlight some West Ham v Newcastle betting tips.

The Hammers are challenging for a European place and can leapfrog Manchester United and return to the top four for 24 hours at least with a victory.

Newcastle are out of the bottom three and looking to pull further clear of danger ahead of Saturday’s match, which kicks off at 12.30pm at the London Stadium and is live on BT Sport.

Hammers still hopeful

West Ham have not been at their best in recent weeks but remain firmly in contention for a top-four finish.

Back-to-back defeats against Leeds and Manchester United last month were a setback but they got back on track with a 1-0 win against Watford before Craig Dawson’s late equaliser rescued a point in a 2-2 draw at Leicester last weekend.

Dawson scored with his upper arm from a corner in the first minute of stoppage time and manager David Moyes said: “It says lots for the players. I will squeeze everything out of them and I want us to challenge the top teams.”

Whether the Hammers can maintain a consistent level of performance through to the end of the season is likely to decide if they squeeze into the Champions League.

West Ham are 7/10 favourites for the win on Saturday but home defeats against the likes of Southampton, Brentford and Leeds this season could prove costly.

All four home losses have featured goals at both ends and both teams to score looks a good option for West Ham v Newcastle betting tips at 3/4 while BTTS in the first half is 18/5.

Magpies have momentum

The big hope for Newcastle was that a January spending spree would allow them to bring in enough quality to avoid relegation and the early signs look good.

Having managed just one win before the turn of the year, Newcastle are now on a three-match winning run and have taken 10 points from their last four games to almost double their tally for the season.

They are 21/5 to extend their winning run here while the draw is 29/10, with Newcastle 5/4 to avoid defeat.

The Magpies have certainly improved defensively, keeping clean sheets in the wins against Leeds and Aston Villa, and being more solid at the back will be crucial to their survival hopes.

The loss of Kieran Trippier to injury is a blow but Dan Burn impressed on his debut last week while on-loan Matt Targett also made his first appearance.

Under 2.5 goals has now paid out in four of their last five league games and is available at 19/20 in the West Ham v Newcastle odds.

Head-to-head

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe may want his side to be more solid in defence but recent meetings have produced plenty of entertainment.

The last was on the opening weekend of this season when West Ham twice came from a goal down to start their campaign with a 4-2 victory at St James’ Park.

Callum Wilson and Jacob Murphy struck either side of Aaron Cresswell’s 18th-minute leveller to put the hosts 2-1 ahead at the interval, after which three Hammers goals in 14 second-half minutes from Said Benrahma, Tomas Soucek and Michail Antonio settled the contest.

Newcastle had done the double over West Ham the previous season, including a 3-2 win on Tyneside. That has been the scoreline in three of their last four wins against West Ham and a repeat this weekend is on offer at 45/1.

The danger men

Trippier has scored Newcastle’s last two goals, including the all-important winner against Villa, so a new hero will be needed if they are to make it four wins in a row.

Chris Wood is yet to get off the mark since arriving from Burnley in the January transfer window but is Newcastle’s biggest goal threat, according to the odds, and is 14/5 to break his duck.

Joe Willock and Ryan Fraser have stepped up their performance levels in recent weeks and are worth considering for West Ham v Newcastle betting tips, with Fraser 11/2 to be on target and Willock 6/1.

Newcastle’s defence will be tested by Jarrod Bowen, who has scored in six of his seven appearances in all competitions this year.

He has opened the scoring in the last two West Ham matches and is 5/1 to do so again while Dawson is 16/1 to use his ability in the air and add to his goal against Leicester.

Looking at the #YourCall options, we like the look of 2/1 for both teams to score and Antonio and Wood both to have at least one shot on target.
