Preview and odds for Sunday’s Scottish Premiership match

Motherwell begin their Scottish Premiership season with a revamped squad as we take a look at some potential Motherwell v Hibernian betting tips.

Hibernian had a tough trip to Andorra on Thursday but will hope to justify favouritism.

The game takes place at Fir Park on Sunday and is live on Sky Sports, with a 4.30pm kick-off, and you can also read our Scottish Premiership betting tips.

Motherwell v Hibernian match odds

After a sticky start to last season, Motherwell narrowly missed out on a top-six finish after they improved under the tutelage of Graham Alexander.

They will hope to get the new season off to a winning start in front of their own fans and are 5/2 to do so.

A staggering 24 players left the club at the end of last season and Alexander is keen to maintain some squad stability.

The Fir Park outfit have signed eight new players so far this summer with several more expected to arrive, amid a backdrop of injuries to key players like Connor Shields, Bevis Mugabi, Mark O’Hara and Liam Grimshaw.

Alexander has signed Liam Kelly (pictured below), Callum Slattery, Kaiyne Woolery and Shields on three-year contracts.

Transfer fees have been paid to land top targets while Kevin van Veen, Stephen O’Donnell, Jake Carroll and Dean Cornelius are all contracted to 2023.

Hibernian finished third in the Scottish Premiership last season but will hope to challenge both a rebuilding Celtic side and champions Rangers.

Hibernian have the added complication of European football to contend with and may be looking ahead to facing Croatian side Rijeka in the third qualifying round of the Europa Conference League.

Hibs are 23/20 to win at Fir Park and they have lost just once to Motherwell in their last six meetings.

Hibs will hope the transfer window closes sooner rather than later.

Although sporting director Graeme Mathie admitted in midweek they are looking to bring in a centre-back and a striker, they will hope they can hang on to teenage left-back Josh Doig, with Watford, Brighton, Arsenal and West Ham all said to be interested.

Scotland striker Kevin Nisbet and nippy forward Martin Boyle are also attracting plenty of attention from clubs down south.

Motherwell v Hibernian head-to-head

The teams last met in April at Easter Road, where Hibernian came out on top in a 3-2 Scottish Cup thriller.

Draws are rare between these two. There have been five stalemates in the last 26 meetings and it is 11/5 the game is drawn in the Motherwell v Hibernian betting tips.

No less than 17 of the last 27 clashes have produced three or more goals and it is 23/20 there will be three or more goals scored this time.

Motherwell v Hibernian team news

Striker Christian Doidge and left-back Doig are back in the Hibs squad. Doige scored seven league goals last season and returned to training last week after battling Covid-19.

Jake Doyle-Hayes has returned to training but is still building up his match fitness after missing large parts of pre-season while Jamie Murphy, Chris Cadden and Sean Mackie remain sidelined.

Motherwell will again be without Mugabi, O’Hara, Grimshaw and Shields and are 5/2 to keep a clean sheet.

Motherwell v Hibernian key battles

Boyle and Nisbit will be a problem for the Steelmen’s defence.

Having scored 15 goals last term, Boyle is 11/2 to score the first goal and 12/5 to score at any time. Nisbet managed 18 goals and is 17/10 to score at any time in the Motherwell v Hibernian betting tips.
