Odds and preview ahead of tonight’s Premier League match
Despite wrapping up the Premier League title last week, Liverpool remain the 5/2 underdogs to win tonight, with City going at Evens. The draw is 27/10.
They boast two of the best attacks in Europe and three of the last five Premier League meetings between the pair have produced at least four goals. Over 3.5 Goals tonight is priced at 11/8, while City to win and Over 3.5 Goals is 7/2.
Liverpool have won every game in which they’ve been leading at half-time in the league this season and our traders have them at 12/1 to win both halves this evening.
In the absence of Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus is likely to lead the line and the Brazilian is 9/2 to open the scoring. Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah is just two behind the leaders in the race for the Golden Boot and he’s 10/1 to score two or more tonight.
After 30 years of hurt, Liverpool players and fans would have felt ecstasy and relief in equal measure when they finally secured the Premier League title a week ago.
But there would likely have been a part of each of them, no matter how small, that would have liked to have saved the crowning moment for tonight’s clash with Manchester City.
The two sides have developed a relationship almost resembling a rivalry in recent seasons. From City dominating the league two years ago and their feisty Champions League quarter-final clash to Liverpool finishing just a point behind the champions last season, drama’s never been too far away.
Despite the Reds’ unassailable lead at the top, there were still fears that they might let it slip once again, but City’s defeat at Chelsea finally put them out of their misery.
And while they can’t secure the title in City’s backyard, they’ll still have the satisfaction of being welcomed onto the pitch in a guard of honour at the Etihad.
With the title decided it might seem as though this is just another game but there’s still plenty on the line.
Liverpool’s mission now is to break the 100-point record that Pep Guardiola’s side set two years ago. City’s mission? To try and stop them.
The hosts have more than enough firepower in their ranks to stop Liverpool, even without the injured Aguero.
Kevin De Bruyne has almost been in a league of his own this term and he’s closing in on Thierry Henry’s Premier League record of 20 assists for Arsenal in 2002/03.
Meanwhile, Aymeric Laporte has started the last two matches and finally looks to have put his injury woes behind him, offering stability at the back.
Jurgen Klopp will have one eye on the points record but he’ll also be aware that games have been coming thick and fast since the restart, increasing the need for rotation.
Mohamed Salah wasn’t risked for the first game back against Everton and Klopp would have no qualms about resting one of his front three, with the likes of Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino waiting in the wings.
And with a home clash to come with Aston Villa on Sunday, he’ll be keen to avoid any key injuries.
Matches between these sides have been unpredictable in recent years, with last season’s 0-0 draw preceded by a seven-goal thriller at Anfield, and both managers may adopt a conservative style to avoid being exposed.
But whether there’s no goals or seven, it’s never likely to be a boring affair and if anything it will serve as a celebration of their on-field rivalry and respective achievements.
