Preview and odds for Tuesday’s Champions League clash

Manchester United travel to Bergamo as they continue their Champions League campaign, so we have scouted the odds to find some Atalanta v Man Utd betting tips.

Just as they had done against Villarreal on matchday two, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side needed a late Cristiano Ronaldo goal to beat Atalanta at Old Trafford, coming from 2-0 down to win 3-2.

Tuesday’s game is live on BT Sport 2 with an 8pm kick-off.

Atalanta v Man Utd match odds

There is no doubt Atalanta gave Manchester United a huge scare in their first meeting a couple of weeks ago when the Italian club took a 2-0 lead inside 28 minutes with goals from Mario Pasalic and Merih Demiral.

Yet they were rescued again by Ronaldo’s 81st-minute winner, after second-half goals from Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire had drawn them level.

Atalanta have only lost two of their last eight home games in the Champions League (W3 D3), while they won 1-0 against Young Boys on matchday two this season.

On the flip side, Atalanta have only won consecutive home games once previously in the competition, beating Dinamo Zagreb and Valencia in 2019-20, and are 8/5 to beat Manchester United.

Atalanta have since drawn at home with Udinese and beaten Sampdoria on the road before Saturday’s 2-2 draw at home to Lazio. It is 13/5 that the game ends in a draw.

This will be the fourth time Atalanta have hosted an English opponent in European competition (currently W1 D1 L1). Manchester United will be their fourth different opponent in this run, having previously hosted Everton, Manchester City and Liverpool – all since the 2017-18 season.

United, who defeated Tottenham 3-0 in the Premier League at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, are 6/4 to do the double over Atalanta and should they do so, they will become the first English club to win 150 European Cup/Champions League games.

They have, however, lost their last three away games in this competition, including a shocking 2-1 defeat at Young Boys in Bern on matchday one.

Mario Pasalic, Atalanta, Atalanta v Man Utd betting tips

Atalanta v Man Utd head-to-head

Their last meeting was their first, yet it is perhaps worth noting that Manchester United have only lost one of their last 11 games against Italian opponents in the Champions League (W8 D2), while they’ve picked up victories in five of the last six (L1). It is 1/2 that they either draw or win the game on the Double Chance market.

Atalanta have only won one of their five games against English teams in the Champions League (D1 L3), with that victory coming away at Liverpool last season. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side have won, drawn and lost in each of their three previous home games against English sides and it is 1/2 that they get at least a point from the game.

Atalanta v Man Utd key battles

As with any side who come up against him, fathoming a way to stop Ronaldo will be the main task for Atalanta.

Ronaldo has scored 60 goals in 88 away games in the Champions League, more than any other player in the competition’s history. The Portuguese has scored in each of his last three away games for the Red Devils in the competition and is 11/0 to score at any stage and 5/1 to score two or more.
