Barcelona star 8/11 to have the higher goal tally

Despite Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly breaking the record for the most goals for club and country in football history, Lionel Messi is the 8/11 favourite to finish his career with a higher tally.

Ronaldo scored the 760th goal of his career against Napoli in the Supercoppa Italiana, moving one clear of the legendary Josef Bican’s official tally of 759, and 30 clear of Messi.

The Juventus attacker is even money to finish with more career goals.

It’s not clear whether Ronaldo has broken the official record though, as Pele’s former club Santos have recently disputed that their former player netted a total of 1,091 goals in his career for the club.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s staggering total has come from his career spanning four clubs, where he netted 450 times for Real Madrid, 118 for Manchester United, 85 and counting for Juventus, with five for Sporting Lisbon. The Portuguese star has also scored 102 goals for his national side.

Although he holds a 30-goal advantage over Messi, the Argentinian is two-years younger than the Juventus star, which could allow for Messi’s career tally to increase past Ronaldo’s retirement.

Coral’s John Hill said: “Given they are the two greatest players of their era, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are always being compared with each other. Ronaldo currently has the record for the most goals for club and country in the history of football, however, our betting suggests when their careers are up, it will be Messi’s total which will be the highest of the two players.”
